R7eamedj£| I Comments on 8.8. u gvE| k*£®S®2Ba Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Jesus Strengthens Hia Disciples, John 16:1-13, for Sunday, March 28. To prepare the disciples for the future, Jesus here foretells their persecution but assures them that divine help to endure will be given by the coming of the Holy Spirit. V.l. “These things have I spoken unto you, that you should not be offended." The teachings of the preceding chapter pointed the way to proceed- Jesus knew the frailty of the disciples and of all men, and because of that, they would be prone to stumble and fall by the wayside. It is one thing to start living right,.but it is another thing quite as important to continue in the right way. “Let him who • standeth take need lest he fall.” ' . V. 2. “They shall put you out of the synagogue; yea, the time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service." To bs excommunicated meant not only to be disenfranchised and expelled, but also that there should be no social relations with such; the excommunicated were counted beneath the level of good people. The persecutors might be consciencious. Saul was an example. V. 3. "And those things will they do unto you. because they have not known the Father, nor me.” Ignorance does not excuse one. especially when the truth is available. Emphasis needs to be placed on such truths as reveal God and his will. A seeker after such truths is on safe ground. V. 4. “But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you jpf them. And these things I said unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.” “These things" refer to his leaving them, and to tfee persecutions to follow. While with them he bore the brunt of hostility. To be forewarned was to be forearmed. V. 5. “Now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me. Whither goest thou t” Evidently the disciples were so de-

AT THIS SEASON of the year it is well for us to give serious thought to our eternal destiny. Man is a dependent to earn a “reward exceeding great.” God has absolute rights over him. He owes everything to Him. the homage of soul and body. From Him he receives his being, his faculties, his activity. Hence he must direct all his aspirations and devote his whole moral life in complete submission to God’s will. This is not a curtailment of Liberty, for man only enjoys liberty on condition that he subject himself to a law. If he is not free to violate the rights of his fellowmen, he is surely not free to violate the rights of God, and God has a right to hie complete loyalty and service. pressed they could say nothing. We are silent in approaching death. Note their depression in theToHowingverse. V.7. "Nevertheless 1 tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; hut if I depart, I will send him unto you." The spiritual realm was to be on a higher plane in the dispensation of the Holy Spirit who had at times made himself manifest in the past, for prophets spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost; but in the future it was to be manifest in going what Jesus did when he was on earth—teach, convict of sip, convert, guide into all truUu times honoring God’s wofff.' pne may recognize him by an added reenforcement when having done one’s best. V 5.8,9,10. “And when he is come, he will reprove the. world of sin. and of righteousness, and of judgment; of sin because they believe not on me; of righteousness because 1 go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment because the prince of this world is judged.” The most vital questions are sin. righteousness and judgment. The most important step in salvation Is the conviction of sin. for without it there is fejt no need of the Saviour. When once convicted of sin, the question of right and wrong is dominant, and hhre the Holy Spirit will deepen the impressions of the right. The Holy Spirit strengthens one's faith in Christ’s atonement to the point of claiming canceled sin which will not be brought up in tlie day of judgment. V. 12. “I have yet many things to say to you, but ye can not bear them now." There is a continual revelation of God to men. What we know about God depends upon our capacity to learn. V. 13. “Howbeit, when the Spirit of Truth shall come, he’will guide you into all truth for he shall not speak of himself. But whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come." Here is a great truth known only by a personal experience of a life fully surrendered to God and ever seeking to know his will." ; —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian education, national council of tKe.
