Ralph Lobaugh Files Plea For New Trial Petition Filed By Fort Wayne Killer FORT WAYNE, Ind. (UP) — An appeal for a new trial was on die today by Ralph Lobaugh. 36, who charged he was under the influence of drugs when he pleaded guilty to three sex slayings, two of which another convict confessed before he was executed. The petition, in one of the most tangled cases in Hoosier crime history, was filed in Allen circuit court late Saturday. Lobaugh also claimed a witness who once identified him has since changed his mind, and that a grand jury indicted him for perjury on grounds his confessions were untrue. Lobaugh was convisted in 1947. He said he received drug injections while awaiting trial from an addict who shared his cell. While drugged, he said, he wrongfully admitted slaying Wilhema Haaga, 38. Anna Kuzeff. 32, and Mrs. Dorothea Howard. 32. Lobaugh first w-as sentenced to bo electrocuted, but that was changed to life imprisonment when conflicting confessions cast doubt in the case. Later, Robert V. Christen, 39, was convicted for the Howard slaying and sentenced to life. He won a new trial and the case against him was dropped. Franklin Slick, 30, who was electrocuted in t the slaying of Phyllig Conine, 16, also confessed to the Haaga and Kuzeff murders.
