Treat Soybean Seed Before Planting Low Germinating Seed Needs Aid Hoosier farmers who have no choice this spring but to use soybean seed that germinates below 75 percent, should treat it before planting time, says Kirk L. Athow, plant pathologist. He calls attention to extensive soybean tests at Purdue in which, seed treatment on low germinating seed greatly increased emergence, but had little to no effect on
the emergence of high ing seed. He emphasizes that there’s no point to treating peed 1 that germinates above 75 percent. Farmers are advised that good fungicides such as Arasan and Spergon will form a protective coating on the seed which prevents rotting organisms from entering through the cracked seed , coats. These chemicals should be used as directed on the container. Seed treatment will also give preemergence protection to weak seedlings, but will not help severely damaged seed. Except where very thin stand may be expected from poor seed, soybean yields are not usually Improved by seed treatment. Athow recommends that farmers not treat with a fungicide if they are inoculating their'seed. However, those who decide to do both should be sure to inoculate just before planting so the inoculant will not come in contact with the fungicide .except for a very brief period. in order to provide an adequate supply of seed with varietal purity for soybean growers this year, the Indiana seed certification service has approved an emergency red tag class for seeds that meet all certification requirements except germination. Red-tagged seeds germinate between 70-and 80 percent. No change was made in the germination requirement for blue tag seed which is still 80 percent. Today's Joke? WINDSOR, Conn.. Many Government Checks Are Stolen Thousands Stolen, < Cashed By Forgers WASHINGTON, UP — Forgers are cashing thousands of checks that the government mails out each month to federal employes, veterans, social security pensioners and others. Secret service chief U. E. Baughman said the forgery racket is one of the toughest problems his agency has to deal with. He believes it could be almost eliminated, if banks, stores and others would obey the injunction printed on the back of every government check—“know your endorser.” The Secret Service last year investigated more than 31,000 forgeries Os government checks worth a total of $2,187,367 (m). it arrested about 2,500 forgers. One of those arrested was a 64-year-old Chicago man who boasted that he could make a ■ $20,000-a-year tax-free income by stealing government checks and cashing them with forged endorse- . ments. People Unobservant He was caught when he made the mistake of cashing a stolen non-government eheck with the company that had drawn it. The girl whose paj- check he’d stolen happened to be behind the cashier's window. *

Baughman said one of the Sec- , ret Service’s chief obstacles in forgery investigations Is the lack of observation on the part of victims. Qtie man stole checks from six friends while he visited in their homes. The Secret Service had traced the forgeries to a short man wearing a bright blue jockey cap. None of the six mentioned him when questioned by agents about a man of his description. And a Chicago tavern actually cashed a "notice of discontinuance of allotment pay’’ for a woman who also thought It was a <seck. Homemade MILFORD, N. H„ UP-Eugene Woodward, a dairyman, needed a good land roller, but he didn’t want to spend much money for one. He got a metal shaft, inserted it lengthwise through an old 'Water tank, filled the tank with rocks and cement—an inexpensive land roller. Prison Blood WETHERSFIELD, Conn., UP— The state's highest per capita record for blood donations to the Red Cross is claimed by inmates of the Wethersfield State Prison. Since 1950, when the program started, the prisoners have given 2,094 pints of blood, or an average of 30 pints every other week.
