R^3SR WL Adams county’s high school basketball season for 1953-54 came to the final curtain Saturday after-, noon as the Monmouth Eagles, Decatur sectional champions for two consecutive years, were eliminated from further contention by the Fort Wayne North Side Redskins. —oOo — North Side then went on to down the Auburn Red Devils in the . final .regional game, and will carry on to the semi-final tourney next Saturday, also at the Fort Wayne coliseum, —oOo—- ‘ The Eagles battldl their hearts out against the highly-favored Redskins in the regional opener, but could not match the superior shooting skill and rebounding strength of North Side, rated as one of the state-s top quintets all season long. —oOo — Harry Myers, veteran forward of the Eagles, closed out his high school career in a blaze of glory when he fought his way to a splendid total of 23 points in his team’s final „ game. Two other Monmouth regulars, Dick Harvey and Dick Bultemeyer, also closed out their high school careers in the regional encounter. —oOo — Excessive whistle blowing marredall three games of the regional. Far too many unnecessary fouls were whistled by the four arbiters, slowing down play needlessly and keeping the four teams from playing better basketball. —oOo — Saturday's action cut the original starting field of 751 Indiana high school teams down to the "sweet sixteen,” who will battle at four semi-final centers .this Saturday, with the four champions advancing to the final four tourney at the Butler fieldhouse in Indianapolis Saturday, March 20. At Fort Wayne, North Side will battle Muncie Central at 1 p.m., with Mississinewa, the state's only undefeated team, meeting Kokomo in the second encounter. —oOo — Most of the state's leading teams are ’still in the running as the field is narrowed to 16. Chief casualty Saturday was South Bend Central, state champions of last season, ousted by Elkhart. This result, however, was not an upset as Elkhart has been rated among the top teams all year. Elkhart, incidentally, is coached by Eill Milliner, who piloted the Monroeville Cubs several years ago when the Cubs became the first Allen county rural school to win a sectional title. > —oOo— Congratulations to Coach Dave Terveer and his St. Joe quintet, who capped a great Season by winning the CYO diocesan championship Sunday. The Decatur Catholic grade school team lost only one game all season while winning 31, and taking down the city, county, deanery and diocesan championships.'
