Outspoken Jurist Seeks Renomination Judge Norvql Harris Sullivan Candidate SULLIVAN, Ind. UP — Norval K. Harris, an outspoken jurist who faced other Judges between sessions of his own court, filed today tor another term as Sullivan circuit court judge. Completing his first 6-year term, Harris filed fox renomination in the Democratic primary May 4. Harris has an unusual record of Judicial appearances which kept him in the public spotlight many months during his present term. One incident sent him to the state penal farm. Harris made news about as soon as he was prepared to take office Jan. 1, 1949. His Republican opponent, Amorine M. Wilson, asked that he be declared ineligible on grounds he once served a federal prison term on a forgery charge. Nine months later, Harris was criticised when appointed co-chair-' man with Negro singer Paul Robeson of a committee to raise funds for the defense of 11 communists on trial in New York. Harris replied he was a victim of "vicious lying and attacks from newspapers.” In January, 1950, a grand jury serving in Ms own court indicted the 62-year-old Harris for forgery, embenlement and issuing fraudulent checks. The first two charges later were quashed and Harris was cleared on the latter. In March, 1950, he called for another grand jury to investigate bis prosecutor,, John K. Purcell. Harr it sent Purcell to Jail for six hours for slaming the courtroom door. Purcell obtained an Indiana supreme court order prohibiting Harris from calling the grand jury investigation of Purcell. Harris .persisted and was hailed before the high court on a contempt charge. •‘l’ve got a lot of weaknesses and shortcomings and do some brainless things,” he told the supreme court, "but one of my shortcomings is not disrespect for this court.” Nonetheless, he was fined 300 dollars and sentenced to 60 days at the state farm. He got a week off for good behavior. While the high coart wrangle l was developing, Harirs also was 1 arrested for drunkenness on the statehouse steps. He didn’t appear to answer the charges in. Indianapolis municipal court, but attended a veterans’ reunion in St. Louis, saying that was “more important. Last summer, he was arrested near Pendleton and charged with drunk driving and speeding. A jury acquitted him on the first charge and he has not been tried on the second.
