Reactions to Gold Salt, Used In Arthritis, Are Reduced
By HERMAN N. BUNDISEN, M.D. THE use of gold salt in treating rheumatoid arthritis has been a widely accepted road to cure. However, its excellent results have been overshadowed by the dramatic side effects of this drug. Therefore, universal acceptance of its value has been prevented. Reactions Reduced "At one time, forty to eighty per cent of the people who were on gold salt treatment suffered bad effects. However, reactions have been cut down to ten to twenty per cent and many of these are very mild. Those who are allergic to the gold develop a severe skin rash or some form of blood disease in which anemia occurs. A lack of white blood cells may also occur and the liver can be affected. However, if the person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis Is under the careful guidance of a physician, the reactions can usually be controlled and will occur very infrequently. - .

THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA
It has been estimated that as high as ninety per cent of the patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis can be benefited by gold treatment. The earlier this treatment la started, the better the results and the greater chance of cure of thia disease. ' Those receiving this type of treatment should be under the constant watch of a physician. A urine analysis and blood count should be made frequently. Relief from Hormones Cortisone and ACTH, although they do not seem to have any curative effects on the disease, do relieve the symptoms, and many physicians are using a combination of gold and these hormones in treating arthritic cases. The cortisone and ACTH servi to relieve the symptoms until ths gold salts can have some curativs effect. i QUESTION AND ANSWER Mr. T.: Can bone be grafted from animals to man? ' Answer: No, it cannot.
Plane Is Used In Uranium Search Seek Radioactive Lodes In Oklahoma OKLAHOMA CITY. VP—Uranium prospectors have taken to the air to search -for the radioactive lodes in Oklahoma's mountains. Geologists armed with a supersensitive instrument that detec|s even minute uranium particles over the Arbuckle arid Wichita Mountains for Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., hunting for deposits. The geologists use an instrument called a '‘scintillometer." "It will pick out a piece Os uranium as small as your hat from the air," said Buffalo Kennedy, head of Kerr-McGee's uranium exploration department. The firm uses a light plane manned only by the pilot and a geologist. The plane sweeps the mountains at an altitude of only 50 feet. To avoid tricky air currents the plane flies only very early in the morning and late in the afternoon. If the instrument tells the geologist he is flying over radioactive material, he drops a flour sack on the spot and another geologist goes in on foot to check the find. May Find Oil “We’ve had some samples brought in from the Wichita Mountains.” Kennedy said, “but we've never found enough to say it was commercial.”

Kennedy said the firm has one plane operating out of Ardmore, Okla., and another in the western part of the country. He said the planes have flown thousands of hours of searches without accident. "We hire pilots who are also
mechanics," Kennedy said, “so the pilot is flying a plane he’s forked on. It keeps them careful." He said the scintillometer may also prove valuable in finding oil deposits as well as uranium, because! of a theory that some radioactive material Is found around oil. . "We're experimenting with it for finding oil now," Kennedy said. “We're investigating the possibilities and making some tests, but it's too early to tell how it works out.” Near Miss BRIDGEPOHT, Conn., UP — A maintenance worker ut a hospital threw a hammer at a flock of birds on the roof. The hammer missed the birds, and shattered a windshield on a nearby automobile.
