I Comments °® s-a jSsI Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson. The Good Shepherd, John 10:1-11, tor Sunday, February 28. Jesus continued encountering the Pharisees and Scribes. This called forth more teachings concerning himself aa the Messiah and also the condemnation of his critics. He was faithful in his task of God’s revelation to manv.l; "Verily, verily I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and robber." Christ Is the door tn that he is the way, the truth, and the life. The religious profession made by the Scribes and Pharisees was false; hfence, in their pretensions, they were deceivers. V. 2. -But we that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.” There are ministers who truly believe and have the qualifications of a shepherd. Jesus gives credit and praise where it belongs. V. 3. “To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear hta voice, and ho calleth hia own aheap by name and leadeth them out.” Language of the day wm used in this parable. The porter was the doorkeeper to tile sheepfold. A true minister of the gospel lives close to his people and knows each member. By bis tender ministrations, ho is known and trusted by the sheep of hia flock; he furnishes leadership and spiritual security. V. 4. “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him; for tey know his voice.” A shepherd went before his flock to lead them to the best pastures and to the watering places; and he warded off any danger. Here is portrayed Christian leaders who care tore the souls of men. VA “And. a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him; for they know not the voice of strangers.” Experiments hy strangers have been made' and the truth of this., versa has been certi-

fied. Jesus taught that the true people of God will not follow false teachers — those who are proud, haughty, and self-seeking as were the Pharisees. Christians have spiritual discernment V. 6. “This parable spake Jesus unto them; but they understood not the things which he spake unto them.” Prejudice narrows the mind so that facts are not comprehended and instills a stubbornness of spirit so that one will not understand even when the truth is plain. The influence of such is disastrous to the spiritual welfare of all with whom they associate. V.7. “Then said Jesus to them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, -I am the door of the sheep.” The truth of the teachings Is made very dear so that there could be no mistake. It is by the merits of Jesus, hia intercession, his sid. and his appointment that entrance Into the kingdom is made. The sheep represent the church. V.B. "All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them." The thought of verse 1 is repeated. Jesus reasons from effect to cause; the people of his day were in spiritual darkness for there was no saving truth in what the Scribes and Pharisees taught. V. 9. "I am the door; by me if any man enter In, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture.” Here is the point John wants emphasized in his gospel, namely, that Christ is the Messiah. The word “saved” holds the essence of the Messlahship. Men will do well to ponder what the real meaning of saved Is. It is the opposite of “perish" as found in John 3:15. It is important that we often apply it and make sure that we, our friends, and all whom we contact are saved. V.lO. “The thief eometh not, but for to steal, and to kill and destroy; I am come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” A spiritual union with God through Christ produces life -r- here is the meaning of being saved. So important is this life that Jesus said, “I am the .good shepherd; the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.” —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the division of Christian education, national council of the Churches Os Christ in the U.
