I Comments I, Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Can This Be The Christ!, John 7:37-44, and 8: 12-19, for Sunday, February 14. Because es his loyalty and his courage, Jesus west down from Galilee to Jerusalem to attend the latter part es an important feast. Though there was growing opposition to him. he stood his ground and made it clear that he was the Christ * V. 37. “In that last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying. K any man thjrst, let him come unto me, and drink.” The use of water in this feast offered aa opportunity to declare himself as a spiritual source for spiritual thirst, but ha made the condition that of coming to him, a recognition of him to the point of accepting him as Saviour. V. 38. “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,) out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” The true believer has bon» within hiqj a new spirit so that be becomes a distributor of life, love, truth, and all the other graces of the indwelling spirit. v. 39. is an explanation of the preceding verse. V. 40. “Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying said. Os a truth this is the Prophet.” There was a confusion in the minds of the hearers, some declaring him a Prophet which was true in part. VAX. “And others said, This is the Christ But some said. Shall Christ come out of Galilee?” Os those wbo confessed Christ the question of his origin was asked: they were ignorant of the scripture. Unbelief dims the perception of the whole truth. V. 42. This verse shows that there was a Jack of sincere seeking of the truth, which explains the preceding verse. V.*3. -“So there waa a division among the people because df him.” When people are satisfied with only a partial investigation, they are almost sure to tee divided.

V. 44. “And some of them would have taken him. tut no man laid hands on him.” God’s method with wicked people has often been that of dissipating their own power. V. 12. “Than spake Jesus again unto them, saying. I am the light of the world; he that followeth ma shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.’’ Jesus continues to declare himself the Christ, this time by the word "light” which means Information, wisdom, and knowledge. To know Christ is to know great truths; to know the great truths about him is to know him. V. 13. “The Pharisees therefore said unto him. Thou baarestrecord of tbysetf; thy record is not true.” These critics bald that It takes at least two witnesses to establish the truth. V. 14. “Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bare record of myself, yet my record is true; for I know whence 1 came, and whither I go; hut ye can not tell whence I come or whither I go.” The fact of Christ as Saviour is spiritual and therefore outside of the realm of their experience, so human witnesses would have no value. V. 15. “Ye judge after the flesh. I judge no man.” In the sense of passing judgment In the realm, of human history, Jesus does not want to be nkown aa a judge; his judgment is in the realm of the spiritual. V. 16. “And yet if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.” The fact of his being the Saviour has the two spiritual witnesses, God. the Father, and God, the Son. It is from the vanbake ground of heaven that Christ Is jutffe. In the following verse Jesus shows a conformity to law. V. 19. "Then said they unto him. Where is thy Father! Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father; if ye bad known me, ye should have known my Father.” God Is only known to the degree that limited human comprehension can fanthom. Christ is like God and because these critics were in spiritual darkness, .their human comprehension was inadequate; -*—Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.
