S. weather bureau today in forecasting six more weeks of winter, at least in the eastern half of the nation. The weather bureau, in its forecast for February, predicted colder than-usuial weather in the east with greater rain and snow over the Gulf States and Atlantic Seaboard. This prediction gave at least partial baeking to the groundhogs at Sun Prairie, Wis., and Punxsutawney, Pa., who darted out of their holes, and saw their shadows. The picture was brighter for the western half of the country with warmer than normal temperatures predicted. Winter concentrated on the east today, although New England experienced a slight warming trend. However, snow spread eastward into New York and New England after dumping up to three inches on parts of Illinois. At the same time, a band of rain moved southeastward over Illinois into. Kentucky and West Virginia. Light showers pelted Texas and widely scattered areas of the Western Rockies. The rest of the country Was fair and mild, although fog whs heavy west of the Rockies. Temperatures across the nation this morning were generally in the 10s and 40s with below freezing readings the Great Lakes and New England. —- Cold air over the Great Lakes, lowered'temperatures 7 to 15 degrees. At Grand Forks, N. D., the mercury tell 20 degrees to a low of 14 above. Nellie Tayloe Ross was the first woman to be governor of any state. She succeeded her husband, William Bradford Ross; as governor of Wyoming.

AFL Heads Discuss Election Campaign Five Million Dollar Kitty kDiscussed JjflAMl BEACH, UP — The American Federation of Labor’s political "watchdogs” looked over 1954 off-year election prospects today and considered prospects of the AFL ”buck-a-head"'war chest collection drive. Members or tne AFL executive council recessed their annual conference for one day for the session of the labor's league for political education, in which the council members act as ex-officio members. Neither AFL President George iMeany nor James L McDevitt, league would disclose in advance the details of any action being proposed in connection with this year’s political campaigns. They said, however, that a part of the third session of the annual committee conference Thursday would be uspd for discussing the league's drlvef or contributions of |1 each from the 10,000,000 AFL members. This campaign Is estimated to yield slightly more than five mil* lion dollars to the AFL kitty for political activity each year. The 1954 executive committee conference thus tar has produced a denunciation of President Eisenhower's housing program as being “unrealistic,” and an expression of concern over the “rapid rise of unemploment” in recent months. The executive council Tuesday disclosed details of a “bold and comprehensive” housing program calling for the mass construction of 60(1,000 low-rent housing units/ within three years. The council proposed an urban re&evolpment program, government assistance for middle income home buyers and better protection of the buyer's pocketbook under federal assistance programs. , The AFL termed the administration’s housing program as being out of reach of low-income buyers and added that today the biggest single housing expense is “the cost of hiring money” with which to buy a home. The council is still studying a jurisdictional dispute between the AFL Airline Pilots Union, the Flight Engineer's Union and the Machinists Union. Members expected to reach a decision before adjourning. Texas has had one woman governor —Mrs. Miriam A. (Ma) Ferguson.
