Geneva Repeats As County Champion
Cardinals Down Decatur . ’ Commodores, 64-55, In Final Battle Saturday
Th# Geneva Cardinals won their second consecutive Adams county high school basketball championship Saturday night, defeating the Decatur Catholic Commodores, 6456, in the final game of the tour ney, played for the first time at the new Adams Central gym. The Cardinals advanced to the finals with a 48-43 victory over the Monmouth. Eagles in a rugged semi-final battle, after the Commodores had rallied to edge out the Adams Central Greyhounds. 62-60, in the first semi-final tilt. Harold Schults’ Cardinals, after the Commodores led early in the championship tilt, took over the lead midway through the first quar ter, and were out in front most of the rest of the way. although the Commodores came up with a spirited second-period rally to overcome a big deficit and move into a temporary lead. • Dave Terveer’s Commodores moved into an 8-4 lead after less than two minutes had been played, but the Cardinals went out in front at 9-8 after three minutes of play, and held a 19-14 advantage at the close of the first period. Field goals by Jerry Tester, Jim Long and Carl Macklin, boosted Geneva's lead to 11 points, but the Commodores then staged the greatest rally of the tourney, tallying 11 points in a row to pull into a 26-25 tie with little more than a minute of the second period to play. Macklin’s free throw was overmatched by Ed Wilder’s fielder and the Commodores were in front, 27-26. Blistering action in the closing seconds netted twopointers by Bob Sch Isler, Johnny York and Tester, and the Cardinals were on top by a 30-29 advantage at the half. Macklin's foul toss opened the third-period scoring, but Joe Wilder's field goal knotted the count at 31-31. York's two-points put the Commodores ahead, 33-31, but Bob . ’ ' Wree-poiht play ah#th9 Cardinals went out in front, 34-33, and Geneva was never again headed on its trip to the title. The Cardinals’ lead was only four points at the end of the third quarter, 45-41, but they built up their final margin in the last eight minutes as the Commodores abandoned their zone defense in a desperate effort to gain control of the ball. Geneva's one-two punch of Jerry Tester, with 21 points, and Larry Hanni, with 17, paced the Cardinal attack. Joe Wilder led the Decatur scoring with 16 and York contributed 11.. ; Only 20 personal fouls were called in the championshjp tilt, 11 on the Commodores and nine on Geneva. The Commodores finally pulled into a 19-19 tie after five minutes of the second period elapsed, and took the lead for the first time at 23-21 on Johnny York’s field goal. The teams were tied at 23-23 and 25-25 but Junior Nussbaum’s twopointer gave the Greyhounds a 27-26 advantage at the half. Adams Central stayed on top throughout the third quarter, holding a 49-37 edge as the teams entered the final eight minutes of Play. Adams Central had a lead of 4542 when the Greyhounds suffered a tough blow when Rod Beer, their center and only big boy on the team, fouled out with sou. 1 minutes left to play. Despite his loss, the Greyhounds kept on top holding a 48-44 lead-with two minutes left to play. There were 16 fouls called on the Greyhounds, 12 on the Commodores. - ••- .Eliminate Eagles The Cardinals, although scoring only one field goal in the entire second half, never trailed as they eliminated the Monmouth Eagles, 48-43, in the second semi-final. Good marksmanship at the free throw line, where the Cardinals connected on 28 of 36 chances, paid off for the defending champions as they were outscored from the field, 18 to 10. The teams were tied early at 1-1 and 3-|, but Larry Hanni, the county’s top scorer, hit his second fielder to give Geneva 5-3 lead, and the Cardinals were never headed.' Geneva held a 20-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 24-18 bulge after two minutes of the'Second period. Dick Bhltemeier then hit a pair of set shots to pull the Eagles within two points at 24-22. but the Cardinals then pulled away for a 30-22 bulge a the half. Geneva’s only field goal of th* second half was scored by Jim Long after two and a half minutes of the third quarter, giving the Cardinals a 33-28 lead. The Eagles cut this advantage to one point, 34-33,with three minutes to play but Geneva added three foul tosses to hold a 37-33 margin at the end of the period. * Hahni was injured in a melee under the Geneva basket late in the third quarter, and was unable to play any of the rest of the game. The Cardinals, however, tallied 11 points on free throws In, the fine! period as the Eagles continued to* foul in a desperate attempt to pull the game out of the fire. Monmouth's last rally cut Geneva's margin to only two points, 43-41, with a little ovar two, minutes of play, with the Cardinals building their final margin on five more free throws. Jackets Lose To Central By 75 To 57 Score The Fort Wayne Central Tigers, vastly over Sizing the Decatur Yellow Jackets, racked up a 75-67 tri uxnph over the Jackets at the North Side gym in Fgrt Wayae Saturday night. - J The Jackets threw an early scare into the Tigers, piling up an early 8-2 lead, but the Tigers recovered and were out in front at the end of the first quarter by eight points, 19-11. Central increased this margin, by five points during the second period, the teams leaving the floor at the main intermission with the Tigers on top by a 41-28 advantage. Seven points by Roger Pollock led a brief Decatur flutry which pulled the Jackets within nine points at 5041 late in the third quarter, which ended with Central <m top by 11 points, 5544. The Tigers, taking good advantage of their superior height, gradually Increased their bulge in the last eight minutes for the final 18polnt margin. Tommy Knox was Central's tqp offensive threat with 23 points, while Johnny Flowers added 17. j Follock paced the Yellow Jackets with 16 markers, with Fred McDougal, at 10, the only other Jacket in double figures. The Tigers gained their advantage from the field, as each team converted 21 free throws. The Yellow Jackets have another tough battle coming up Tuesday night, traveling to Huntington to meet the Vikings in Decatur's only game of the week. — Monmouth Wins Reserve Team Tourney Title The Monmouth reserves, playing a careful control game all the way, edged out Berne, 18-17, Ip an overtkne struggle, to win the Adams county reserve team tourney championship Saturday night. The game was played as a preliminary to the final game of the county tourney kt the Adams Central gym. It was a low-scoring tilt all the way, With Berne leading at the first quarter. 2-0, at the half, 7-6, and at the third period, 10-9. The teams were knotted at 1414 at the end of the regulation playing time, with Monmouth scoring four points to Berne’s three in the overtime session. Flueckiger of Berne was the game's high scorer with eight points, while three Monmouth players tallied five points each. By a strange coincidence, Monmouth won all three of its tourney games by one point, all low-scor-ing Affairs. In the other Fame Wednesday, Monmouth travels to Roll. . The Decatur Commodores will be at home Friday night, meeting the Ossian Bears, winners of the Wells county tourney last Saturday. Precious Blood had a 9-6 lead at the first quarter, but St. Joe was In front at the half, 14-11 and at the third period. 18 13. Albert Egly Given Individual Award For Sportsmanship Albert Egly. Adams Central sophomore and regular forward for the Greyhounds, was awarded the individual sportsmanship trophy at the Adams county tourney Sat-v-day night. - The trophy is awarded annually by Robert Monnle, former Decatur business man, in honor of Everett Rice, prominent Monroe resident. Egly was selected for the honor by tourney officials. This trophy and the first team and second team championship trophies, donated by the Decatur Dally Democrat, were presented by Gali Graibtll, Adams county school superintendent, following the final game Saturday night.
