I Comments on &Ss a aßa Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Jesus and the Samaritans, John 4:27-43, tor Bunday, January 24. Jesus found an occasion at Jacob’s well to teach the importance of aaul-Tlnniag by personal work dealing with any one, even those that are despised. V.J7. "And upon this came the disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman; yet no man said. What soekest thou? or why talkest thou with her?" Jesus, weary and hungry, conversed with a Smarttat woman of IB repute, convicting her of her sins and pointing her to accept his salvation; the disciples having left him to secure food, now returning were perplexed but had such respect for Jpsus that they would not criticise him: they just marveled. Va. 28,29. “The woman then left her watarpot, and wont her way into the city, and aaith to the men, Come see a man wbieh told mo aB things 1 over did; to not this the Christ?’’ This woman did what every eonvart will de—told others about Christ; ao absorbing was this now found joy that she forgot her waterpot. V. 35. “And they went out of the city, and eame unto him ” Something happen# in the Ilves of others when one sinner is converted. V. 31. “In the mean while the dtaolplea prayed him, saying Master, oat.’’ They bad made the necessary provision for the physical bod go why ought they not ent together now; they tailed to understand that son) saving to so exhiiirating that food is forgotten. V. 3?, But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of." For a moment Jwus' would stir their imagination and lead them to see the things of greatest importance |n life. V. 33. '‘Therefdresaid the disciple# one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?" They still persist on the need of regular meals- ' v. 34. “Jesus said unto them. the world, and it took his teachings his example, and his death oh the cross to finish this work. V. 35 “Say not ye. There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up our eyes on the fields, for they are white already to harvest.” As he was talking with the disciples, the people stirred by the testimony of the Samaritan woman were coming to him and their coming was the harvest of the seed sown in the heart of one lone, despised woman. V.J6. "And he that reapeth recelveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth may rejoice together." Untold joy is the reward of soul-winning, and now his disciples may share this joy with him since for two days the revival of religion continued. V. 37. "And herein to that paying true, Chic soweth agd another reapeth.” Here is an old proverb, winning souls is a cooperative work in which the influence of many may have a P*rt, V. 38. “I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor; , other men labored, and ye entered into their labors." It was in SamI aria that the gospel spread later, , that called for appointed supervi- . eion by the Jerusalem church, and , where Christ's followers were first t called Christians. t V. 38. “And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him > tor the saying of the woman, which - testified. He told me all that ever - I did.” It is by means of personal . witnessing for Christ that apirit- - ual influences are produced. It to , not more or better preaching we - need, but more and better Chris--1 tian witnesses. • V. 41. “And many more believed - because of his own word.” Chris- • tian influences need the help of the Word made effective by a I voice in w-hieh Ood is heard. t V. 42. “And said unto the woman, 1 Now we believe, not because of I thy saying; for we have heard him t ourselves, and know indeed that this is the Christ, the Saviour of - the world.” Here were true converr sions and sincere Christian wlt- ’ nesses, giving, expression to the f great truth concerning Christ. BH Dr. Prank Price, moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, recently predicted that Communist China will break with Russia. He also said the United Nations sometime will be forced to admit'Red China to membership because “she is so strong.” Dr. Price, who was born in China fifty-eight years ago to missionary parents, is himself a veteran of thirty years’ missionary service in that countr. He and his wife were held hostage in Shanghai by the Communists for three years and were the last of the Southern Presbyterian Church’s eighty missionaries to get out of China.
