Charles Wins By Knockout In 2nd Round CHICAGO, UP — Ex-champion Bzzard Charles was a “hungry" fighter today, aiming for the steaks and chops he might buy should he beat Rocky Marciano in a fight to regain the world heavyweight crown. Charles, a 189 pounder from Cincinnati who succeeded Joe Louie as the heavyweight king by winning an elimination tournament became the hottest Marciano challenger Wednesday night when he finished Chicago's Bob Satterfield r.ith a left hook knockout at one minute of the second round. “Sure, we want Marciano," Manager Tom Tannas announced. "But we don’t want to quit fighting until we get him. We'd like a couple of more fights, with Nino Valdes or Dan Bucceronl, or anybody, un til we can get Marciano. “Charles isn't a hungry fighter, like that,” he said. “He's got property, but he isn’t at the point ..where he can quit ..fighting, And he won't be for a while.” -Charles' win over Satterfield for which he received $4,000 from television, plus $4,882.23 as 36 percent of the net gate of $13,949 paid by 4,921 fans, didn't come easy. “He hurt me, in the second round,’’ Charles said. ‘And he was throwing bombs all the time. Why, he'didn't miss me that much with some of those swings. And they weren’t vMld; either. If he'd had a razor in his hand, he would have shaved me. “He hurt me with one punch, just before I got him. But in the first round, he was Just coming close. Had figured I'd get him in eight rounds, but I’m sure glad I didn't have to go that long. Not the way he was swarming on me. "I figured he’d take a punch and then back away. But he didn't. Just kept coming in. And he was throwing real punches,” Satterfield, disconsolate after the defeat, which broke a string of four straight \nockouts for him, wanted only “a return match." "I’m sure not going to quit fighting.” he said. “But a guy that's knocked out. he can't say much about what hit him. And you can't say what punch knocked you out.' The International Boxing club suggested that Charles, now 32 years old, used against either Valdes or Buc ceroni in the stadium before he gets a Marciano chance. Catterfield. 31. also collected $4, 000 from television, plus 20 percent of the net for a total pay check of $6,789.84.
