In one of the most intensive programs of oil exploration ever attempted in India, the prospecting includes three different types of geo-physical surveys — seismic, gravitational and aero-magnetic. The field of operation extends from Mtshml Hills to MiKir Hills, northeastern and southeastern extremities of the state of Assam. While ordinary aircraft are to be used in the aero-magnetic survey, technicians await the arrival of , helicopter* to launch the seismic survey.
OH at 10,000 Feet It all began some months ago when oil was found at a depth of i nearly 10,000 feet at Nahorkotiya, in Lakhlmpur district, 18 miles southwest of one of the Dlghoi oilfield. This discovery ted .to a completely new assessment, of the valley’s petroleum possibilttSfes. ‘‘t’ife pur- , pose of the three-way geophysical survey is to ensure accuracy 'and ■ eliminate waste of time in l the . quest for oil. where the first drilling was made, yielded oil at a depth of 10,000 feet, Although this seemed most promising, the drilling was continued in search of yet deeper possibilities. Last May; after a year of hard labor, the well reached a depth of 11,175 feet, the deepest to be drilled in India. At this extreme depth, nearly two and a quarter miles, the temperature of the earth and the pressure of the water-bearing sands made farther drilling inadvisable. It was then decided to stop and take production tests of the oil zone encountered at l(,000 feet. Second Teat Well The first of these tests was begun late last June. An oil scientist skilled in “Schlumberger gun perforating techniques" set up his equipment at Nahorkotiya and

fired bullets into one of the under ground oil sands from a special tyjw* of electrically operated gun barrel lowered into the well. Thta. operation proved successful. The crude oil produced was piped to storage tanks and the accompanying surplus gas was burned of as a safety measure. Meanwhile, engineers prepared for a second deep well at Nahorkotiya. Pile-driving operations are in progress to provide a firm foundation for the 140-foot high steel derricks which will lift the drilling outfit over the low-lying paddy fields. Nahorkotiya will be linked with Digboi by a direct road through the Assam jungle and Upper As sam. This road, which will accom modate an oil pipeline for transporting the crude oil from Nahor-
kotiya to the Digboi refinery, also will serve the new drilling locations on the Digboi side of the Bralii Dihing River. Precise MEMPHIS, Tenn., UP — Robert MeQregor Brd spotted a motorist who really believed in obeying signs. The man had a ruler and was measuring the distance his auto was parked from a sign reading, "No parking for 25 feet.” A Swell Reason ROCKFORD, Wash., UP Vhe old theater tradition that the show I must go on was broken on the eve of the Rockford High school play.
