Teaches Handicapped How To Play Piano Teaching Is Done By Denver Woman DENVER, Colo., UP — MraTSva. Welbourne; a Denver piano teach er who has found that the keyboard will respond to something besides agile fingers, is devoting much of her time to making handicapped persons happy. One of the students at the Welbourne Music Center for the handicapped here has neither hands nor feet. But he learned to play the “Missouri Waltz" in a month. This particular student, considerably encouraged by his newly acquired skill, uses books attached to his arms on the keys and-oper-ates the pedals of the piano by shifting his weight forward and backward on a board extended from the stool he sits on. Similar contraptions and gadg ets are used by Mrs. W’elbourne to teach less extreme cases. One student, for example, lacks the ability to do things with his fingers. But he can grasp and hold onto things. In his case, a potato is used. He holds a spud in both hands and strikes the keys with them. The result is music. A simple thing like a doorstep has been used in other cases. Accidental DiscoveryMrs. Welboume explained her idea to help teach handicapped students —put to use that which they have to work with and make them forget about the physical faculties they don’t have. The “Sister Kenny of the piano keyboard.” as she has been called, operretT her unusual music center here last September. She started with six students and six piano teachers. The teachers have no physical disabilities and are taught to spread Mrs. Welbourne's way of teaching the handicapped. The idea of teaching handicapped persons to play the piano came to Mrs. Welboume by accident - while she was playing one of her husband’s favorite pieces. Her husband, who was in an adjoining room at the time, was amazed to find out latpr she was using only two fingers, one on each hand. Before coming to Denver last August, Mrs. Welboume worked
