State Traffic Toll Is Lower In 1953 Slight Decrease Is Reported In State INDIANAPOLIS; UP—lndiana’s traffic toll dropped slightly last year, the first time since 1943 a decline was noted in comparison rrith the previous year. i Joseph Lingo, Indiana traffic safety director, said today 1953 highway deaths numbered 1.265 persons. or 12 fewer than 1952's fatality tqll of 1,277. However, there is no assurance the final toll will not exceed the 1953 toll. Any deaths occurring iu the future from injuries suffered in accidents occurring last year will apply against the 1953 toll and thus increaee lt. Lingo said much of the credit for the dip belong to motorists who drove carefully during the holiday period from Dec. 21 - 31. Lingo said there were 26 deaths during that period last year, compared with 50 in 1952. A stepped-up law enforcement campaign and greater press and radio publicity on traffic safety were factors cited by Lingo In cutting the toll. However, the death rate, whclh averaged about one fatality every seven hours of the day during the year, ranks as one of the worst in modern Hoosier history. The heav-_ lest toll occurred in 1941 w'hen 1,478 persons lost their lives in traffic.
