Wheal Crop May Add To Nation's Surplus Winter Wheat Crop Estimate Released WASHINGTON, UP — Agriculture department experts said today next year’s wheat crop may, add to the nation’s already-large grain surplus, even though farmers comply with federal production controls. Commenting on a report Monday which estimated 1 the winter wheat crop at 750,140,000; bushels, one spokesman said: ‘‘lf we succeed in holding dur own next year”—producing enough to meet demand without addiqg to Jhe surplus pile—“we’ll be doing pretty well.” He saw no prospect of actually reducing wheat surpluses next year. The crop reporting board said winter wheat farmers, who normally produce about 70 percent‘ of hte total wheat crop—“appear to have responded” to the acreage allotment program. It estimated 46.575,000 acres were planted to winter wheat this fall, about 18 percent less than last yOar and the smallest planting since 1943. However, anticipated yields of 16.1 bushels per acre are up about one bushel from last year and 10year average yields. If conditions continue better than they were during the past year of drought, yields could easily increase more. Futhermore, in the past, winter wheat estimates have tended to increase later in the crop year. This yar, for example, the final production estimate was nearly bushels above the first estimate. 7 ■ With good yields on both winter and spring wheat crops, it would be| quite possible for total output to exceed the one-billion bushels estimated to be needed for domestic and export requirements. TWO CONVICTS | (Continned Fra— Pa«e <*■•> t(| be free.” '• >T fear he. will try to carry out his threat,” Jetos said. Dowling was considered much less dangerous but police were warned he might try to “shoot it out" if cornered. His mother, Mrs. Dorothea Dowling, said her son Was “not a bad boy” and pleaded with hi mthrough Detroit newspapers to give himself up to avoid, possible bloofislied. Armed patrols of uniformed officers patrolled Detroit streets, roadblocks were manned and detectives checked underworld sources the fugitives might try to contact.
