Bars Jury Members From Future Service Judge Explodes At Not Guilty Verdict CHICAGO, UP — A judge has ordered three women and nine men banned from federal court Jury duty for life for turning “a hardened criminal out on the street.” Federal Judge Joseph Sam Perry exploded when the jury brought in a ' “not guilty” verdict Friday in the case against Alphonse Bartkua, 25. Bartkus was accused of leading a three-man gang in the $3,750 holdup of the Federal Savings and Loan Company in suburban Cicero last July. Two alleged accomplices, Joseph Consentino and James Brindis, had pleaded guilty, named Bartkus as their leader, and are now awaiting sentence. The jury deliberated three hours before acquiting Bartkus. When Perry heard the verdict he snapped “wait a minute.’’ "Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “I’ve never been so disappointed in my life. You can hang your heads in shame. /“This is a disgrace and an abominable shame,” Perry continued. “You have turned a hardened criminal out on the street. He was a leader, and the brains, of this gang.” The angry judge brushed aside Bartkus’s statement that he wap in a barber shop at the time of the robbery. “Anyone could have seen through this flimsy alibi,” he said. Police still had Bartkus in custody today, planning to hold him on a concealed weapons charge.
