z Some Florida farmers flooded their fields to hold down damage from frost in the state’s vegetablegrowing region. Gold northwesterly winds whipped the Great Lakes region, bringing snow flurries also occurred in the northern Appalachians, from West Virginia northward into New York state. > The snow was locally heavy in some sections. South Bend, Ind., reported five inches of new snow in the past 24 hours with a total of nine inches on the ground. About a foot of snow -was dumped on Dunkirk, N.Y., and /Erie, Pa., as the Jesuit of unusual conditions on Lake Erie as the cold air moved into the east. , Authorities in some southern Minnesota communities warned parents to keep their children off .the thin layer of ice that formed on lakes. The cold wave left occasional ice slicks on roads in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and lowa, where snow fell earlier this week. However, most highways were reported safe. Except for the spotty snow area near the Great Lakes and in the Appalachians, most of thfe nation had fair weather. However, rain was expected by tonight along the north Pacific Coast and in extreme southern Texas.
Anfi-Raiding Pad Is Signed By Unions First Step Toward Full Union Merger WASHINGTON UP —The giant CIO and AFL began working on the mechanics of a merger today after signing a formal agreement barring any inter-union raiding for at leapt two years. CIO President Walter P. Reuther and AFL President George Meany said the no-raid pact is the first concrete step toward a full merger. But neither would predict when this goal might be realized. The anti-raiding was signed by the two leaders Wednesday. It is effective for two years, beginning Jan. 1, but only binds the parent organizations. To became completely operative, practically speaking, it will have to be endorsed by the various, member unions. Both Meany and Reuther predicted that all, or nearly all, will sign up eventually. They plan to call a meeting for this purpose “at an early date’’—probably some time after Jan. 1. Reuther already has commit-

Coldest Weather In Two Years In State Sub-Zero Reported For Three Cities INDIANAPOLIS, UP —lndiana got a taste of its coldest weather in two years as temperatures skidded below zero. Three cities reporting sub-zero readings early today were Seymour with 3 below, Lafayette, 2 below, and Indianapolis, minus 1. The Indianapqlis reading was the first below zerb reading here since Dec. 16, 1951, when the mercury dropped to minus 15l The capital city reading also missed by two degrees the alltime low for Dec. 17 set in 1914. Low temperatures in ’ a 24-hour period ending this iporning ranged from Lafayette’s 2 below to 9 above at Evansville. Wednesday afternoon; readings got’no higher than Evansville’s 35. Snow fell only in the extreme north, where South Bend reported .19 inches., The weather bureau said tonight's lows will be 2 to 8 above, with slowly rising temperatures Friday.
