Speed Record Set By Rocket Plane 1,650-Mile An Hour Record Is Revealed WASHINGTON UP — Maj. Charles E. Yeager baa flown two and one-half times the speed of sound—about 1,650 miles an hoar — in the air force's XIA rocket plane, it was reported todajr. Informed sources said the West Virginia-born test pilot achieved the record-shattering speed last Saturday In an historic flight over Edwards Air Force Base, Calif, Yeager thus regained the title of the world's fastest man which he had won originally on Oct. 14, 1947, when he because the (irst to fly faster than the speed of sound. The 1947 flight was made in the XIA. Both were built by Bell Aircraft Corp. Yeager’9 reported speed eclipsed the officially-announced all-time record of 1,327 m.p.h. which was set only last Nov. 21 by Scott Crossfield, test pilot for the national advisory committee for aeronautics. ■ - Crossfield flew the navy’s Doug-las-built skyrocket. He was the first to fly twice the speed of sound. Sound travels at 760 miles an hour at sea level but drops off to kbout 660 m.p.h. in the cold air ■ above 30,00 fr feet. It was learned there is a controversy within the government over whether to announce Yeagert feat. One segment of the air force hoped to keep it secret. Others have hoped that President Eisenhower will announce it officially, with precise figures on speed and altitude,, at an Aero club dinner here Thursday night marking the 50th anniversary^of powered flight.
