State Police Encouraged By Speed Limit State Speed Limit Law fn\ Force Now For Seven Months INDIANAPOLIS, UP —lndiana’s 65-mile per hour speed limit law has been in force for about seven months and state police today said they were encouraged by its results. \ It is difficult to determine the law’s role in combatting the state's high traffic death toll, since it is, impossible to say how many fatalities were prevented by it. But state police Supt. Frank A. Jessup said he feels the new speed lid is working out in a “very effective fashion.” Police officials indicated it still wa,s too early to determine whether the 1955 legislature would be asked to amend the law —either to lower the limit or establish a 6555 day and night speed differential. Records showed that from April 1, when troopers began enforcing the law, until Sept. 1 violations totalled 1,593. Os these, police obtained 1,445 convictions, which they termed a "pretty high rate,” From Jan. 1 to Sept. 1, troopers made 11.199 arrests for all speeding violations, compared with 10,799 for all of last year. The majority of these arrests were for violations in posted low-speed zones, usually in areas adjacent to communities. About one-third of all arrests for moving violations were for speeding. A police spokesman said the rapid growth in suburban living has vastly increased the state's traffic problem and boosted the number and extent of posted zones. He said most of the suburbanites are heavily dependent ~on their autos for daily transportation. Indianapolis, where the problem is particularly acute as borne out by U. S. census figures for the decade from 1940 to 1950, showed a population increase 9.7 perCHRISTINE JORGENSEN, the former GI who claims to have been transformed into a woman by surgery In Denmark, displays an engagement ring in Las Vegas, Nev., during an appearance there.
