Yellow Jackets Downed By Geneva Cardinals In Opening Game Os Season
The dll-victorious Geneva Cardi-. nals made it five wins in a row Friday night, riding roughshod over the Declatur Yellow' Jackets, 76-52, at the Decatur gym. The game was Decatur r s first of the season. ■ It wad a nip and tuck battle for the first quarter, which ended with Geneva on top by a lone point, 1716, but the Cardinals started, to pull away midway in the second period and from then on it was strictly no contest. ■’ ‘ yS. Geneva grabbed a-5-0 lead in the first piiriute and of play and was still on by five points'; 9-4. before the Jackets began to move. The Ca’dinals still held; a fivepoint margin at- 15-10, but John Neireitei hit a field goal, Dave Halterman two free throws and Roger Pollock a two-pointer to give Decatur a 16-15 leat} with 2.8; seconds to play in the period. Larry Hanni then hit his third two-poinfer of the quarter io give the Cardinals their 17-16 margin at the end of the period. Genevt, built its lead to 27-20 after three minutes of the second stanza ind then pulled steadily « away to hold a substantial 41-27 margin at the half. Food Mixer, Toaster Stolen From Home Theft of a SSO food mixer and an automatic toaster worth $22 was reported to police today by James Lough, of 1021 Line street. Lough told police that someone got in through the back door of his house. Lough discovered the theft about midnight, said police. Berne Bears Are Defeated By Portland T?he Berne Bears, after leading by a lonp .point at the first quarter, were defeated by the Portland' Panthers, 54-37, at the Portland I gym Friday. J - T Berne was on top at the first period, 12-11. but Portland led at the half. 22-17, and at the third quarter, 41-30. Silvers led the Panthers with 18 i points, while Kirchhofer was high for Berne with nine. The Bears had a tough loss when Stu Miller, veteran from last year, suffered a severe ahkle injury in the second quarter, and it is feared he will be out for three weeks or longer.
