I'ek-amcl ' I Comments F on &St f Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Christian Compassion for a Needy World, Matthew 6:35,36; Mark 1:32-34; 8:1-9, for Sunday, November 22. in this lesson is taught compassion for a needy world and whMt to do about it. V. 35. “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel and healing every Sickness and every disease among the people.*’ In the Christian program there are three definite services—preaching, teaching, healing. In our foreign missionary program, provisions must be made for preachers, teachers, and healing, the latter calling for doctors, nurses and hospitals. The latter Service opens the Way for the two others. r V. 36. “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” Compassion for Jesus meant a breaking heart. Dr. Laubach says, “Out of the 2,200,000 people in* the world, 1,700,000 are usually in debt all of their lives, are in want, more or less oppressed, and. increasingly unhappy, determined to be free from want” The situation in Korea is appalling. As Christ’s followers, we will have compassion on them expressed in deed. V. 32. “And at even when the sun did set, they brought to him all thkt were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.” Jesus* compassion had been demonstrated before, so those needing healing came in crowds. It we in the United States shpw a like compassion, communism will have no chance to survive. , V 5.33,34. “And all the city was gathered together at the door and he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils.”! The news of Jesus* having healed a demoniac was hailed as good newb by all the city. Good news always follows the work of Christ. V.l. “In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them.

I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and having nothing to eat.” Jesul had just returned from Decapolit, populated; by Gentiles who, too, were recipients of his grace, and likely many followed him and with others stayed with him drilling to endure the pangs of hunger. This situation brought out Jesus’ compassion. V. 3. “And if I send them away fasting to . their own homes, they will faint by the way; for divers of them came from, afar.” Jesus foresaw future suffering. The desperation of the situation increased Jesus* compassion. Such desperation exists today, and we too must be compassionate. V. 4. “And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men here in the yilderness?” The disciples followed the line of reason; they would not even make an effort to do any thing about it. They were short in faith a® to the supernatural power of Jesus. l 3 - m \ , V. 5. “And he asked them, how many loaves have you? And\they said five.” In the most pressing circumstances willing givers find something that can be a blessing to others. y V. 6. “And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground; and he took the sevep loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. Jesus works through human instruments; we are his coworkers sharing what we have with those in need. Note that Jesus set the example of saying grace before meals. V.7. “And they had a few small fishes; and he blessed and commanded to set them before them." Evidently all food in their possession was given over to the Lord to be blessed by him. V.B. “So they did eat and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.” Jesus used the multiplication table on the loaves and fishes with a plus of left-overs. If the Lord only has a chance, he will work miracles today. V. 9. “And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them awdy." Followers of the Lord after they hate come must go and tell the good news. - —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Cbuncll of the Churches of Christ in the U.
