Illinois Only Unbeaten Team fin Big Ten I CHICAGO, UP — Unbeaten llk liaois was only - one game away from clinching at least a share of the Big Ten grid title and a virtually Rose Bowl shot today, but there’ll be no odor of roses around Coach (Ray Eliot’s' dressing room. “Everybody’s talking about the [ Rose Bowl to us/’ Eliot said. “But ' Dtease. don’t play that up. What no- ’ body seems to realize is that we’ve got two tough ball games > ahead of us, against two tough i opponents. | -The llliiii face a major battle 1 this weekend at Madison against * last year’s Rose Bowl team, the | conference co-champions, Wlsconi sin. The final week of the season | the foe will be Northwestern, L which has beaten Illinois in every I game but once since Bob Voigts 1 became head ooach. “They’re, both Big Ten teams,” Eliot complained, “and this league • is too tough to let up against anybody.” - Eliot's club player probably its best game of the season Saturday to beat Michigan, 19-3, for it fourth Big Ten win against no defeats. ' Two Illini fumbles in the first f«|v jninutes led to Michigan’s on- ■ ly points, a field goal from the ’ 36 yard line by Lou Baldacci. But thereafter J. C. Caroline I romped for 184 yards on 30 cars ries and Mickey Bates scored • twice on plunges of five and four ; yards. Caroline’s rushing' total in I Big Ten play reached 738, only 36 yards short of the, league season record, and the Carolina sophomore- beat a new Illinois single season ground gaining mark set. by Red Grange 39 years ago., £ , In addition to Wisconsin, beaten once in four league gapies, only one other team apparently had a chance to catch the Illini, Michigan State, losers once in five Big Ten, starts. The Spartans this week play Michigan at East Lansing. Should Illinois down Wisconsin, the Badgers would be eliminated . from the race, and Michigan State would have’to beat Michigan and hope for a Northwestern win over Illinois to get a chance to share 'the league title. Should Illinois and Michigan State tie for the crown, it appeared certain the Illini would get the vote of the athletic directors to represent the conference in the Rose Bowl rather thaq Michigan State, - in its first year of league coin petition. ■Le Roy Bolden scored three touchdowns Saturday to pace the Spartans to a 28-13 win over Ohio State, while Alan Ameche, scoring ' once, made 84 yards in 17 curries i as Wisconsin topped Northwestern * In oth,er Saturday games Minnesota dropped Indiana, 28-20, and lowa trampled Purdue, 26-0., Notre
