No Resolution To Oppose Supports Western Governors Shie From Action ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (UP)— Western governors blamed the federal farm price support pro gram today for many of 1 their states’ soil conservation and reclamation problems but shied away’ from a resolution opposing the supports. « Utah Gov. J. Bracken’ Lee met a cold reception when he proposed that a conference of 11 western governors go on record opposing price supports. At Des Moines, lowa, Gov. William S. Beardsley said it wriuld be ‘impractical and for agriculture secretary Ezra T. Benson to ask the stated to pay a bigger.share of farm aid costs. . ‘ When the'federal government bcllectsr 80 percent of! the tax revenue, it is up to the federal government to pull 80 percent of the load,” he said. "To attempt to cut the American economy into 48 segments is ridiculous. Beardsley, a Republican, is chief executive of one of the! nation’s biggest farm states. Gov. Colorado, said any resolution aimed at eliminating supports would be “highly unpopular.” Thornton commented that “the government has been very cooperative in creating a dust bowl in eastern Colorado. "I charge the federal government with destruction of watersheds instead of protecting them,” he said. “Hundreds of thousands of acres of eastern Colorado have been plowed up for wheat by suitcase; farmers who cash in on the crop supports.” , Arizona Gov. Howard Pyle fears reclamation projects aimed at increasing landl under irrigation will only serve to Increase crop surpluses. Interior secretary Douglas McKay said Monday night that the “primary goal” of the Eisenhower administration “is still private ownership of land.” WATCH VOTING (Con tinned From Pnge Oat) left vacated by appointment of Thomas-A. Berserk Policeman Finally Captured Police Captain Is Seized In Atlanta ATLANTA, (UP) — A “very dependable” police captain gone berserk battled more than 50 fellow officers \and an armored car for five hoqrs Monday night before he was overcome by tear gas: Capt. Tom A. Andrews, 4U, “upset over poor health,? threw’ tear gas bombs, and fired two shotguns, an automatic rifle and a pistol during. his lone stand until two officers and an electrician crashed into his gas-filled house and found him unconscious. - Andrews, a veteran of 18 years ce the suburban East Point police force, was taken to Grady hospital here where he was reported to be ‘all right” today although he was being given oxygen. Police said that whether charges would be filed against him would depend on a doctor’s report as to his sanity. During the five-hour seige, officers fired shell after shell of tear gas into Andrews’ four-room frame home from the protection of an armored car while a giant spotlight lit up the scene and Andrews dared them to “come in and get me.” One officer was wounded in the leg by a shotgun blast from, the house. Andrews' wife. Tillie, his 18-year-old s6n, Ronald, and’ his father had |beepjvhd«ed from the house by the police captain before the battle began; Andrews tossed a tear gas bomb at his family as they fled. Americans were hopeful they might be treed under an amnesty provision regardless of U. S. government moves. V . • Trade iri a Good Town — Decatur
