Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Stronger Churches, Better Communities. Acts ,2:41-47; Philippians 1:27-30, I Peter. 2:4-10, for Sunday, November g. Immediately after Christ's ascension the church was born with the function of carrying out the work which Jesus bad been doing. As Christ transformed the character of men and Womep, a h etx ®r community followed. This is God's program for today. V. 411 "Then they |hat gladly received the word were baptised; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.** The power of the gqspel as preached by Peter resulted In a great revival, the converts uniting with the believers, making the beginning of the church. V. 42. "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking bread, and in prayers.” There was harmony and unity; there was Scriptural teaching; there was fellowship with a common meal characteristic of a big family. Here is an ideal church. . V. 43. “And fear came upon every soul and many wonders and Signs were done by the disciples.” there was reverential awe, the tight attitude for a church. The miracle of the conversion of thousands with other wonder produced receptive minds and a deep devotion. Evangelism in the church portrays the life and work of Chrtst oh earth today. Va. 44,45. "And all that believed were together and had all things pommon; and sold their possessions and goods and parted them to all men, as every man had peed." Here was real brotherhood in practice. V. 46. “And tyey, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.*' The habit of worship in the temple was continued; they were faithful in attendance at public worship, and after worship they ! went out into the community to ' spread the gospel. Here is an add-.I ep picture of the early church. i V. 47. “Praising God, and having ; favour with all people. And the !

Lord adped to the church daily such as should be saved." Praises to God characterized the early church; there was a rejoicing in seeing people converted. There was no need of church advertisements, billboards, or any other appeal for church attendance and Christian work.
V. 27. "Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ; that whether I cpme and see you or else be absent, I may bear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel;** Here is an appeal for everyday living to measure up to the standard of the gospel which they professed; here is taught continued harmony with a constant, striving toward the ideal. It is not so much in attainment as in striving that all should be concerned- are to strive to enter the straight gate. After conversion, there is the growing of the soul that demands attention. V. 28. "And ip nothing terrified by your adversaries; which is to them an evident token, and that of God.” God’s are always gcbflV'rtr anWapts to produce the fall of Christians, especially converts. Where such attempts are seen, there is revealed the presence of the tempter and also the fact of salvation. V. 29. “FOr unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer or his sake;” The refining of suffering produces patience and makes possible the victory of faith. Paul presents his experience as an example. See verse 30. V 5.4,5. “To • whom cqpning, as unto a UWng stone, disallowed indeed of all men, but chosen of God apd precious. Ye also as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, to offer UP spiritual sacrificea, acceptable to God through Jpsus Christ’ The church is a Itviug organism; Christ arisen and working in men by the Holy Spirit is th® fpundpr-and in it every follower takes his rightful place; the church generates the needed spiritual force for a better comnjupity and a better world. V 5.9,10. "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people, etc.” In the church are God's cfaosep people to express God's will to all men. —Based on popyrjghted outlines produced-by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.
