Says Farm Bureau Head Out Os Step | Says Kline Losing Contact To Farmers ■ . - r v . . - COLUMBUS, Ohio UP —Congressional farm lawmakers today accused the leader of the nation's biggest farm organization of being out of step farmers in advocating flexible and lower price supports for farmers. Rep. Harold O. Lovre R-S.D., a member of the touring house agricultural committee, said that Allan B. Kline, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, “has lost contact with the ‘grass roots’ thinking of farmers.” Lovre and several other members spoke out in reply to Kline’s charge that the committee made up its mind to recommend continuance of present rigid high supports even before setting out to get t“grass roots” views of farmers. Kline added in a speech at Des Moines Monday that “price fixers are having a heydey” with fears of recession. \ Rep. W. R. Poage D. - Tex. commented that Kline, instead of condemning the committee, should accept his invitation to come before It and present his views on farm legislation. The hassle developed as (bhlo farmers lined up to testify at the ing. The group has traveled 1,200 committee’s final midwestern hearmiles in the last eight days. It has held hearings in Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, lowa, Illinois and Indiana. \ On the basis of what they have heard frdm the farmers, the farm congressmen — Republican and Democratic alike—have concluded that the Republicans could, mot expect to hold their own in the 1954 congressional elections unless the Republican congress next year votes to continue rigid high government price guarantees for "farmers. They expect the congress to continue the present program of 90 per cent of parity price supports the six basic crops which expires after the 1954 crop year. Predicl Low Farm Prices To Continue Republicans Admit Worry Over Prices WASHINGTON, UP — The agriculture department had bad news for .the nation’s farmers today—low farm prices are likely to continue in 1954. The prediction came as Republicans frankly admitted they are worried about the possible effect the farm situation might haye on their party’s chances in the 1954 congressional elections. An outlook report by the bureau of agricultural economics said prices farmers get for their produce may average slightly lower next year although “some further decline” in the cost of the products they buy is “probable.” “This' means that the cost-price squeeze is likely to continue in 1954 as id 1953,” the BAE said. During the first nine months of the year, prices paid by farmers for goods and services used in farm production — including interest taxes and wages—averaged about 4.5 percent below the same period last year. At the same time prices received by farmers for their crops were down 11 percent. z The report said the cost T price squeeze, described by President Eisenhower recently as an “economic grinding machine,” intensifield considerably early this year but has changed “relatively little” in recent months. Net farm income next year is expected to be lower than this year for dairy farmers and many cotton farmers. Higher net incomes were predicted on corn belt beef hnd hog fattening farms, and on northern plains wheat, small grain aad livestock farms. The report forecast \ “little change” in 1954 prices of fertilizer farm building materials, farm supply and fencing materials, pesticides, seed and farm wage rates.
