Charge Six Kokomo Men With Beating Charge Non-Striker Beaten At Kokomo \ ItOCANSPORT. Ind. (UP) —Six Kokomo men were under $3,000 bond each today on a riot and rout charge in the beating of' a non-striker during the recently ended 60-day Indiana Bell Telephone Co. walkout. ■ J Cass county prosecutor George Babcock filed complaints against Dossie Wright, James Leedy. Manual Arroh, Garfield -Hunter, Andrew Johnson and William Hepler. Babcock claimed the men stopped a car driven by Frank McLane, 23. Indianapolis, as he drove from Kokomo to Culver on Sept. 1. He said McLane was pulled from his car, 1 warned to quit his temporary job at Bell’s Kokomo exchange and 'knocked ' unconscious. y The defendants were located through a license plate, Babcock said. He said Wright told him union leaders at a CIO meeting at Kokomo instructed them to ‘rough up” McLane and tell him to stay out of the city. Bevan and five followers cantured six of the seven seats on the 27-member \committee by local labor party branches.! The fiery Welshman polled a record 1,142.000 votes. Judge Howell Quits Claims Court Post Will Head Illinois Roads Commission WASHINGTON UP — Judge Evan Howell Monday submitted his resignation from the U. S. court of claims effective Sept. 30. Howell, former Republican congressman from Illinois, is to be named chairmah of the Illinois toll roads commission. He will resume private law practice in Springfield and Chicago. He told reporters after a conference with President Eisenhow-er that the salary, $17,500 a year, was one of his reasons for leaving the federal bench. He will get $12,000 a year\as chairman of the toll roads commission but can augment that with earnings from his private law practice. Howell declined to say in Chicago last jveek whether he will run for U. S. senator next year. He had been a member of congress 6% yeArs when former President Truman appointed him tb the claims court in October. 1947. The White House released an exchange of letters in which the President accepted Howell’s resignation “with sincere regret." Howell told the President he was persuaded to resign by two major considerations — the difficulty of maintaining a family of seven in Washington on a judge’s salary, and a desire to return to private practice and active participation and factories.

But, he added, his information indicates "more and more” that the person involved “may not be Beria.” Cow Is Shot Dead By Hunter's Rifle GOSHEN, Ind. UP —Walter J. Hoover found his $225 \ Holstein cow dead in a pasture Monday. It had been shot once in the heart and Once in the head with a rifle. Sheriff Vernon L. Cripe' said a hunter apparently was responsible. Methodists To Build New Home For Aged INDTANAtPOLIS UP — Methodists of the Indianapolis district meet Saturday to launch a |l,250,000 fund campaign to finance construction of a new home for the aged at ‘Franklin and new churches In Indiana. A site was chosen several years ago for the home, and church leaders expect to start construction soon, expanding the structure with additional wings from time to time as inunej- is available.
