Armando Arias, Los Angeles, who has the reputation of being the “most captured U. S. soldier" in Korea. Arias has been in and out of Communist POW camps repeatedly for the past three years, alternately escaping and being retaken by the North Koreans or Chinese. As Arias stepped from the gangplank, a flight of 11 F-86 Sabre jets from nearby Hamilton air force base flew low over the pier in an “M” formation honoring Col. Walker M. Mahurin, Victorville, Calif., the highest ranking air force flyer to be taken' captive by the Communists. Aboard the ship was Sgt. Burl B. Cites Weaknesses Os Prison System Columnist Cites State Conditions INDIANAPOLIS, UP —An Indiana newspaper columnist today quoted discharged prisoners from the state reformatory at Pendleton as saying food served there is “almost as unpalatable as that given prisoners of war in China." Frank A. White, who writer “The Hoosier Day” for many state papers, made the statement in a column of “observations regarding the Indiana prison system weaknesses." . White mentioned that the reformatory has had, or will have had, three out-of-state “experts” as wardens in six months. “What ails our prison setup has been building up over decades, through official incompetence and public neglect,” White wrote. He \said Paul V. McNutt, Democratic governor from 1933 to 1937, “dallied with the ills” and Gov. George Craig, a Republican, “faces a wide chasm between idealism and real- | ity.” He said there is no doubt Craig “wants to reform our archaic prison system.” But he said one reformatory superintendent was transferred when “he began to point out some unpleasant things.” ’ White said an applicant for athletic director at Pendleton was “screened- and sent over from the statehouse” who professed as qualifications that he had “voted
