TV’s Top Actress r Registered As Red Lucille Ball Acted Only To Please Kin HOLLYWOOD UP — Lucille Ball, television’s top actress, maintained today she registered to vote as a Communist in a 1336 primary election only to please her Socialist grandfather. But the red-haired comedienne, star of the “I Love Lucy” show, denied ever joining the Communist party or ever casting a ballot for a Communist candidate. Rep. Donald Jackson R-Calif. agreed “there is no indication that iMiss Ball ever was a member of the Communist party.” Jackson disclosed Friday that an investigator for the house unAmerican activities committee, of which he is a member, had taken testimony from the actress. “Miss Bali has cooperated with the committee investigator in all respects,” Jackson said. “She has acknowledged her Communist party registration.” Jackson eaid, nevertheless, th? committee plans to continue investigating Miss Ball’s case because “no ease is ever closed.” The actress had this to say about her link with the Communist party: “I explained that the reason I did it was because my grandfather wanted me te. At that time, it didn’t seem at all wrong to try and please him. “It was his last <few years. He had always been a Socialist . . ,we registered — my mother, brother and myself. That was all there was to It. I never voted myself ... and 17 years later they present me with this.” . \ j ' Her husband, Desi Arnaz, who stars with her on the television show, also denied his Wife had ever been a member of the Communist party. ]•• 1 ■ “She was never a party member or held a card,” Arnaz said. “She never belonged to any front organization or any committees. You know Lucy, she doesn’t ewen know who the hell was governor last year.” If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try. a Democrat Want Add. It brings results.'
Bell Phone Strike Still At Stalemate Final Issue Is No Nearer To Solution INDIANAPOLIS, UP —The final issue prolonging the Indiana Bell Telephone Co. strike was no nearer solution today. Federal conciliators called another joint bargaining session with company and union representatives. Both sides “stood firr|i” at Friday’s joint meeting a “no progress” was, reported in working out a back-to-work clause, the sole barrier to settlement of the 53d ay-old walkout. Clyde M. Mills, assistant director of the federal mediation and conciliation service, and conciliator Arthur Pierson, conducted the session. The stalemate arose When Bejl fired 20 workers, including several officers of the CIO Communications Workers union, on charges of “personal misconduct.” Bell advised the discharged employes could appeal to the national labor' relations board if they; believed they had a case for reinstatement. The union hurled a charge of strike breaking hgainst the utility and claimed the discharged men were guilty only of “picket line A Bell spokesman defied this, and made public a list of incidents, which he said formed the basis for the dismissals. The spokesman said they included knocking an operator from a chair and beating him; throwing a cup of strong chlorine solution into the face of an employe; striking an employe twice on the head -witih a bottle; throwing a cup of coffee on a wbrker; throwing eggs and stones and kicking employes entering buildings, and threatening an employe with “profane and obscene” remarks. The union, meanwhile, received a pledge .of full support in its strike from Walter P. Reuthe, president of the CIO. “The attempt by Indiana Bell to discharge 20 workers for union acivlty is a throwback to the labor practices of two decadbs ago," ißeuther telegrammed the Indiana CWA office. “As you continue to man your picket lines, the entire CIO is marching In spirit with jvou,’’ he added. f Attend Daughter's Religious Profession Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Rumschlag have returned from Glendale, 0., where they attended the religious profession of their daughter, Mother Mary Catherine, as a home mission sister of America.
