Indiana Fair Gets Off To Slow Start Indiana State Fair Opens This Morning INDIANAPOLIS Up — The Indiana state fair got off to a slow start today as it began its century of activity, dampened by the state’s first showers in 25 days and cooled by the first pleasant breezes ip 10 days. | Attendance was slim In the first few hours of the nine-day fair, probably because most Hoosiers awoke this morning to cloudy Skies which later blossomed into shattered rainfall. The rain shopped In time for a midtmorning parade of iBO high school hands along Indianapblis streets, hut the marchers had? to pad through small puddles. . I The J.OO-de'gree weather of the j past, few days didn’t ?slow down the livestock exhibit. Thousands of head of eattle, swine j and sheep filled stock building, i So many tj|ogs weie entered an extra tent • with 300 j pens was raised. Extra interest in hogs was credited to a 1952 fair ban on out-of-state swine due to an outbreak of vesicular exanthema. The heat killed one hog Wednesday night. \ In early 4-H judging. Hilton Henry, Connersville, took first places in two Shorthorfi steer classes. First place in a Hereford steer division went to an - arrimal disI played by Ted Hunt, Lafayette. Ih sheep classes, champion honors were awarded Malcolm Vawter, Russiaville, who showed an Oxford ewe: Ron Athan. Bluffton, Dorset: ewe, and Marvin NesiUs, Rensselaer, Cheviot ewe. , A Hampshire barrow exhibited by Robert Huff. Lafayette, was awarded first place in the heavyweight division. Preston Rinker, -Noblesville, was reserve champion and took first in the lightweight Hampshire class,. -a \ ; : i ■ y■ M If you have something to sell or rooms for yent. try a Democrat Want Addi It brings results. : \ ■ J ; X i M Trade in a good Tov»n — Decatar
