Condition Os Crops Excellent In County County' Agent Says Prospects Are Good Nature has been ' kind to the farmers of this county and prospects for all crops are “good," according to Adams county agricultural agent L. E. Archbold. Moisture, says the ag man, has been adequate and although the county could use more rain, there is still no reason to begin complain* ing. (Archbold happened to mention the latest word on the tragic farming situation in Texas. He said he has heard that perennial grasses have been scorched to death and it will be years before the situation gets anywhere near normal. These grasses, which hold the soil, said Archbold, will have to be replanted and that constitutes an enormous Job.) i With departure of the chinch bug Archbold was able to state that the by blights of one kind and another have been kept down and there is not much commercial loss whatever. Corn borers, said the agent, are light and not much trouble is expected. Farmers are taking off the last of the first planting of oats and, landsmen are delighted and surprised to see the yield and weight above their expectations. Later planting, declared Archbold, will not be to good because weather conditions weren't the best for their development. Straw from both oats and wheat, is being baled and farmers are taking the second cutting of alfalfa. Corn, is “excellent,” avers the agent, and many plants are beginning to tassel. “Color on corn about the best I’ve seen it and I look for a gold harvest when moisture gets to the safe maximum moisture content of 22 percenlt,” he announced. Soy beans are beginning to bloom and the agent expects an “excek lent” yield, due to the ideal growing conditions for the plants. Dill being grown northeast of Berne by some farmers is being taken off and distilled for the oil that is used to proves dill pickles. The seed of the plant is processed for the oil. While the market for dill is limited, said Archbold, good prices hold for the few farmers who grow it. ' Tomatoes continue to lead the pack fqr quality and quantity, having gone through perfect conditions every of the way. according to rhe ag<Jnt. They will begin coming off about the middle of August and the canning season in the three plants of the county, as well as' elsewhere, should be off and running for a good season.
