Delay Opening Os. Mexico University Hew University Only Three-Fourths Done DALLAS. Tex., UP—The American Petroleum Institute’s marketing division, which long has recommended that automobile owners change their oil every 1,000 miles, has revised its stand somewhat. Now the API recommends intervals varying from every 500 miles to every 2,000 miles, depending on the type of driving. Its three classifications are "city and suburban driving,” for which it still recommends a change every 1.000 miles; “dusty or cold weather driving,” for which it recommends an oil change every 500 milek, and “open highway driving,” for which it recommends changing each 2,000 miles. The recommendation of the marketing division’s lubrication committee defines the three types this way: City and suburban driving —

r COUNTY AGENT’S * | COLUMN Leaves Affected Two people in Adams county have brought to county agent L. E. Archbold pin oak leaves having a sickly, yellowish green appearance. The trees are probably suffering from chlorosis —a nutritional deficiency brought on by a lack of available iron. Dr. George B. Cummins of the Purdue University botany and plant pathology department, says the yellowish leaves may even de-. { ielop small brownish dead spots '.between the vein. Some loss of leaves frequently follows. However, poor color is the main symptom. It results from a subnormal development of chlorophyll. If the disease is not corrected, Cummins states, slow growth results and the pine oak may ultimately die. So he recommends that home gardeners apply a spray made up of two and one-half ounces of ferrous sulphate and three teaspoons of ordinary washing detergent. mixed with three gallons of water. LaU afternoon is the best spraying time, he adds. This treatment will give rather rapid relief, but is not a lasting cure and should be repeated as needed. For more permanent correction of the deficiency, the soil should be treated by applying powdered sulfur at the rate of five pounds per JOO square feet over an area corresponding to the branch spread of the tree. The sulfur must be watered in thoroughly. Cutfimins recommends annual applications until the condition is corrected, and points out that a combination of foliage spray and soil treatment wijll probably give the best results. The European corn borer destroyed an estimated bushels of corn in the United States in 1952.
