I CommenteJ#! F on as.-aryl LessonJMpgf Creamed continents on the Sunday school lesson, Paul’s Joy in Christ, Philippians 1:12-27, for Sunday, June 28. Paul in prison was the recipient of a gift from the church at Philippi and by, the messenger, Ephraditus. sent a love letter back to this favored church. He expresses his joy in Christian service even if in prison and yearns for this church that it may know Christ as the source of joy also. V. 12, “But I would that ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened to me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel.” Paul as a prisoner was favored by having his own hired house with liberty to witness for Christ.A -13. “So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace and in all other places.” It was conceded (hat Paul was unlike other prisoners because he was related to Christ; PauLspoke of Christ so earnestly that the guards Were impressed, and they have a good report of Paul; such reports were carried tq others. , V. 14. "And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to spealf the word without fear.” Paul’s zeal was contagious, causing others to speak boldly for Christ. The power of the church is seen in the zeal of its members. V. 15. “Some indeed • preach Christ of envy and strife, and some also of good will,” As today, some declare Christian truth having a wrong motive, but there are others who have an inner urge of right motives. V5.16.i7. "This one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds; but the other of love knowing that I am set for the . defence of the gospel.” Paul was tried by persecutions but was buoyed up by faithful friends. f V.lB. “What then? Notwithstnading in every wya,-whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is prfeached; and I therein do rejoice,
Those who find fault with you may you to find yourself, while many times those who praise you may be leading you astray, strange as that may seem. No one really owes you any. praise, so when it is bestowed on«ou it is in the nature of a gift. If Vou really have done good work, that is enough reward for you, but if the work has been below your ability, you are not entitled to any reward. The U’orth of praise is measured by the worth of those >-ho give it. Divine approval is better than the praise of men. ' Lesson Prayer: Lesson prayer: We are grateful tor the joyful association and help md encouragement of. Christian friends. Grant that we may [render such Christian service to i others that there may be formed a tie that binds us together.‘We would nake the most of the present, absolving ourselves of th! past and rusting God, for the future that ill our time and talent may be exrted usefully sot others. The most dangerous chasm is sarcasm.

yea, and will rejoice.” Paul disregarded personal feelings but in every thing that happened he rejoiced that the gospel had the right of way. V. 19. “For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, an the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” Paul is hopeful of better days to come. There is victory in the feeling that better days are yet to come. V. 20. “According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life or by death.” Paul’s greatest wish was that all should turn put to honor Christ. It is not so important that we live as it is that we live right. V. 21. “For me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” While there is a joy in witnessing for Christ in affliction and persecution, in death afflictions and persecutions- are left behind: hence a gain in dying. V. 22. “But if I live in the flesh this is the fruit of my labor; yet what I shall choose, I wot not.” Death is uncertain; Patjl would forget about it and continue to labor for the Lord. It is the present about which we need to be concerned most. V. 23. “For I am in a straight betwixt ; two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ which is far better.” Paul was sure of heaven so why should he worry. V. 24. “Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you”. There is a tie that holds one to earth with the thought of being helpful. M \ V. 25. “And having this confidence, I know that 1 shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith.” The Philippian church lean depend on the faithfulness of Paul. I V. 26. “That your rejoicing in nie may be the more abundant in Jbsus Christ for me by my coming rp you again.” There is a natural ray in anticipating the visit of an bid friend who will give Christian encouragement. Paul’s prayer in pie next verse is for Christian character and conduct. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by thq divis.'on of Christian education, national council of the Churches of Christ in the U.
