Bridges said Mr. Eisenhower did not express' an opinion as to whether President Syngman Rhee’s defiant action would hold up a truce. Hendrickson, ’a member of the armed services committee, did not attend the breakfast. But he issued a statement about the same time saying “I strongly believe that the . . committee should initiate- an immediate investigation to determine the extent of American culpability in the case of the escaped prisoners.’’ He said Rhee’s attitude was known and “it would have been incredible for the American military command to permit lax prisoner safeguards with the truce delicately balanced on the prisoner repatriation issue." N. and Communists — had been detained too long. Rhee said he decided to Release the prisoners to avoid any “misunderstandings" among his people in their fight for Korean unity. Lt. Gen. Won Yong Duk, the ROK military police commander who made the first official announcement that the mass escape was a government-sponsored project to foil peacemakers at Pgnmunjom. warned any attempt to detain the prisoners would be met by force. •Rhee said he personally ordered the mass breakout for reasons "too obvious to explain.” The outbreak threatened to prevent signing of an armistice agreement, expected on or before June 25. third anniversary of the" Korean war. «
