Well-Wishen Help Family In Chicago Gifts Pour In Frdm Throughout Nation CHICAGO UP — (Mrs. Ma.v "Mollie” O’Gara, trying to support six children while her husband lies paralyzed, said today all’s right with the -world. "People really are good-hearted,” she said. Two weeks ago she was destitute. She had carefully budgeted $56 left from her city emergency relief check to feed her children and self for the rest of the month. While she was at the rear of her tenement caring for her smallest child a thief entered at the front and took the |53. "Whoever he was, he changed our whole life,” 'Mrs. O’Gara said today. “Now I’m off relief and ( never was so happy. I didn’t like to take the city’s money." Newspaper the heart-breaking loss Mrs. O’Gara had suffered; that she had lost her suburban home when her husband was stricken; and that she was fighting to keep her family together. The gifts (began pouring in from all over the country—New York. Louis. Chicago, Indianapolis, Portsmouth, Va. and other cities—in one, two and five dollar amounts. The total hit $8.35 in eash. with more comi&g in, plus a washing machine, furniture and clothes for the children. She appeared Monday on a radio show and received other gifts, including a wheelchair for her husband. When she received the cash ]?he became ineligible for she was happy to get off the relief rolls. | '! “The Lord does his work in strange ways.’ she said. “Since I know He’s watching now we can't help but win. H e wouldn’t have sent the wheel-chair If Ray weren’t goinc to be okay and come home.” O’Gara, a carpenter, suffered a stroke January 17. and lies paralyzed in a hospital. The mortgage was foreclosed on their home in suburban Oaklawu and the family was forced to sell its furniture 'Mrs. O’Gara put Patrick. 7. Raymond, 6. Mary, 5, Mike 3. and Kathleen, 2, m St. Joseph’s home for the friendless and placed her ‘baby Eileen, one. in St. Vincent’s orphanage. She went to woik as a Waitress until she found the tenement and had enough cash to last a few weeks. Then she Quit her job. took the children to the home and waited until the money ran out. “We sure had to skimp,” she said. “I cut us down to two meal.» a day. We just stayed in bed all morning and skipped 'breakfast." Finally she had to ask. for relief. She paid the rent and bought some groceries with part ot the first and only check she received. The thief got tire rest and started the family back on the path of hope and happiness. "We have three meals a day now,” iMrs. O’Gara said, “and that s fun. Soon. I’m sure, my Ray will be home.” Adams Central FFA Meeting On Friday The. Adams Central high school FFA will )iold their regular June Friday at McMillen park ! at 6:45 p.m., ft was announced by Martin Watson, Adams Central vocational ag instructor. Watson said the meeting place was being changed from Monroe due to a scheduled ball game between Adams Central and Monmouth FFA’s. All members of the team are requested to be at the park on time. , Water Ball Practice For Firemen Tonight The water ball champion Decatur volunteer fire department will sold water ball practice tonight at the firehouse to gird for weekend activities at Rensselaer for an area volunteer firemen's meet. Chief Cedric Fisher made the announcement and stated about 20 volunteers and himself would attend the annual get-together. Joseph D. Bibb, director of the state public safety department, said a statewide search still was going on for Republican Rep. Peter Schwartz Dies In Sturgis Hospitaler Peter 'Schwartz? 80, Adams county resident most of his life, died at 9:30 p. m. Tuesday at a Sturgis, Mich., hospital. Surviving are the following children:. Joseph P. Schwartz ot near Berne, Mrs. Christ Stauffer of Mich., Jacob S. Schwartz of Sturgis, Mich., Chris Schwartz of Inde< pendence, la., and Joel Schwarts of Centerville, Mich. The body will be removed from % the Yager funeral home to the Joseph P. Schwartz home, where friends may call after 10 a. m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a. m. Friday at thd home, with burial in the Schwartz cemetery four miles north of Berne. * |
