Adapting Chemical Compounds Tough Some Successes In Reducing Sickness NEW YORK, UP—A large-scale attack on the nature and control of virus diseases, mental disorders, cancer, heart and circulator)’ diseases through an extension of basic research is .perhaps the most important assignment facing America's test-tube warriors. A recently published Manufacturing Chemists’ Association Facts Books said that research screening programs on the thousands of

chemical compounds that have been made but hot thoroughly investigated may yield the answer to the cure to the common cold, which affects the average American twice annually, and other infectious and degenerative diseases. The Federal Security Administration estimates that, despite advances ip recent medical science, illness and premature death cost Americans 138,000,000,000 annually. ' - - The use of medicinal chemicals of all kinds is expected to increase greatly. Many will be taken for promoting good health rather than for curing diseases. New antibiotics, plasma, volume expanders, synthetic hormone compounds and new chemotherapeutic agents will
see greater inroads made on the forces that prey on man’s health, according to the collected facts. Two Promising How men of science have striven to check disease and increase man’s life span was illustrated by a recent survey by MCA in the book, which pointe out that four out of five medicines and drugs widely used today were unknown 10 years ago. The Factb Rook said that of the 14,000 medicinal chemicals tested for anti-malarial activity, only two have shownl promise. Only four anti-spasmodic drugs out of hundreds tested and classified are; ndw widely used. Only eight of more than 5,000 pain-relieving compounds developed have passed tests with flying colors. To develop one of the newest wide-range antibiotics, a team eventually numbering 55 scientists spent two and one half years examining 100,000 soil samples at an approximate cost of J 4.000.000. It has been estimated that $25,000,000 wtas spent during the past five years for research in the development of ACTH, cortisone and other pituitary and adrenal hormones. It will be many years before profits equal research expenditures. Some Successes Success in reducing mortality and sickness in the hazardous first NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS.
