I \ George Stjuier, well knoivn custodian at Decatur high school, who recently underwent a major operation at Adams county memorial hospital, is recovering rapidly and will soon be able to resume his duties at the school. While! Squier was in the hospital, he received many floral bouquets and cards and while making his first visit to the business section of Decatur Wednesday since his illness, he visited the Daily Democrat and asked that an expression of thanks be extended for him. The Rev. John E. Chambers, pastor of Trinity Evangelical United Brethren! church, left this morning to attend the meeting of the board of trustees of Indiana Central college,’ Indianapolis. Rev. Flood Emergency In Montana City Thousand Persons Flee From Homes GREAT FALLS, Mont., ,UP — A boiling flood crest, which sent 1,000 persons fleeing from their homes upstream, was expected at the junction of the Missouri and Sun Rivers here within hours today. Gov. J. Hugo Aronson prepared to Issue a disaster proclamation for Great Falls as the two rivers almost isolated this city’s 40,000 residents. Normally tiny tributaries of the main streams were also running wild, swollen by four days of heavy rains. Belt Creek was rushing past and through the town of Belt, Mont., a half-mile wide in spots. The town of 700 population was without drinking water and up to 30 feet of water was flowing through parts of the village. I "It couldn’t be any worse if we had the whole Missouri River in here,” said Mayor W. M. Moore. Aronson held ah emergency meeting late Wednesday night with Great Falls Mayor James Austin, who a few hours earlier had declared his own \ state of emergency after 150 fairiilies had to evacuate their homes i in West Great Falls. ' In all, the flood water forced an estimated 1,000 persons from West Great Falls and nearby Belt to leave their homes. Elsewhere In the area, hundreds of others were marooned at farm homes and email communities along both rivers. ~ v Aronson ordered state highway engineers to make a “complete survey” of damage to roads and bridges and to equipment is available for immediate repairs. Despite the 10,000 sandbags piled along the riverbanks in Great Falls, a number of areas in the city were .Xjooded. Basements of warehouses along the Big Muddy were already filled- Nevertheless, the main portion of the city was not believed to be in danger. At the town of Sun River, 25 miles west of Great Falls, 30 families, or practically the entire population of the town, had to. leave.
