D., said today Britain should explain whether tpe Chinese Communists seized or were permitted to buy a > British ship used to ctjrry Red troops in the Far East. He said neither the state department nor British ambassador Sir Roger Makins had cleared up the mystery of how the Communists gained control of the “Miramar.” Mundt spoke as acting chairman of the senate permanent investigating subcommittee which; Thursday published a state department letter identifying the ‘ Miramar” and another British-owned vessel, the “Perico.” as having hauled Chinese Communist troops during IS>sl and 1952. Makins promptly replied that the ships were not flying the British flag at the time, were therefore npt subject to British law. and appeared “toi have been under the effective control of the Chinese Communists." * The state department identified the shipp and tireir owners Thursday. several d*ay» after assistant counsel Roliert F. Kennedy told the subcommittee that Britishowned vessels had been carrying Communist troops in the far east as recently as 1962. Assistant secretary Thurston B. Morton wrote the subcommittee that the Perico carried troops from a Yellow Sea port to tlhe Pearl River Estuary in China in June 1951 and also sailed from Hainan Island to the Pearl River Estuary with more troops during July 1951. 1 ‘ Morton said both the Perico and Miramar were registered under the Panamanian flag at the time of their trips. But the Panama government promptly cancelled the registrations on protest from the U. S. government.
