Coronation Week Rites Opened Today Churchill Assures Queen Elizabeth Os Subjects' Loyalty LONDON, UP — Prime Minister Winston Churchill today told Queen Elisabeth II the British constitutional monarchy and the, United States are united in their hatred of dictatorships. Speaking at a banquet of Commonwealth premiers and lawmakers in ancient Westminster Hall, opening the ceremonies of coronation week, Churchill assured the Queen of the loyalty of her subjects. their appreciation of the ‘‘■burdens Imposed by sacred duty upon the sovereign and her family?’ “We resolve to prove on the pages of history that this sacrifice shall not be in vain,’? he said. He said it was dangerous to compare forms of government, but assured the Queen that Britain likes its system very much. “Thd key thought alike of the British constiutional monarchy and the United States of America” he said, “is the hatred of dictatorship. “Both here and across the ocean, over the generations and centuries, the idea of division of power has lain deep at the roots of our development. “We do not want to live under a system dominated eithefr by one man or one theme.” 1 The prime minister spoke in reply to the Queen who spoke briefly to the assembled | Commonwealth representatives from the exact spot w-here Charles I was convicted of treason 304 years ago. Elizabeth drove with the Duke of Edinburgh through a cheering crowd of 10,000 persons massed in a steady drizzle outside Buckingham Palace to the massive hall below Big Ben. Prime Minister Churchill headed the 75G members of the Commonwealth association assembled at the banquet. ! Elizabeth responded to the toast “The Queen” by recalling that her late father. George VI, met with representatives of the legislatures of the Commonwealth nations on the evo of his coronation. “I am indeed glad to follow his example.” she said in a firm, voice. ' 1 “It is a stirring thought that all these legislatures are descended from the assembly which first met Under this roof nearly seven centuries ago. We stand here in the Palace of Westminster which is the home of the mother of parliaments." I Elizabeth was simply dressed for the occasion in a steel-blue silk dress, a small golf- felt off-the-face hat and black open-toed shoes and black accessories. She was seated on the exact spot where a parliamentary court of justice convicted Charles in 1649 and ordered him beheaded. She spoke after the playing of “God Save the Queen” and a fanfare of trumpets. Churchill’s response was his biggest role in the entire coronation ceremonies, for he will merely assemble with other prime ministers at the Abbey ceremony.
