Cancers Now Being Cured Chemically Experiments With Rats Successful LOS ANGELES, UR —Cadcers now are being Aired chemically—easily, quickly, and permanently. It seems miraculous but, unfortunately, the cures are inly of laboratory rats. However, if it can be done in rats, it may not be too long before science w ll start doing it iA men. Scientists, are beginning to find out how two rat cancer cures ire brought about. Both cures are extremely complicated, because they, deal with body chemistry whichis mainly invisible even under powerful microscppes. Dr. Riojun Kinosita, visiting professor of, pathology at the University of California at Los Angeles, explained to a group “Os visiting science writers -how -the eheWiieel compound trf \ - ethylene - melamine—called, for short, tem-cures, in rats, the most, deadly known cancer which normally would kill them in only seven days: With tern, Dr. Kinosita cures Sthese rat cancers every time—loo Cancers, 100 cures, lyith tern, he messes up the reproductive machinery of the cancerous cells. Cancer pells caught by tern while in the process of dividing into new cancer cells divide into cells which have a killing surplus of chrombsoanes. This surplus prevents them frpm re-dividing and kills the cancers of premature old age in a few days.
Dr. Kinosita found out how tem works by studying a chemical which commonly is used to cause experimental cancers in animals. This is methylcholanthrene, a coal < tar derivative, which both causes " cancers and, it is now developing, arrests their growth — depending dn the method and amount admin- . iste ( red. In arresting cancer growth, it does what tem does to the rat chancers, ' but much more slowly and much less effectively. Tem starts destroying cancer cells three hours after injection, Methylcholanthrene needs 18 hours to start. Thus its slow-motion work on the rat cancer cells gave the Japanese scientist, who is famous among cancer research workers, the time he needed to understand w’hat went on. Tem and .methylcholanthrene work bnIUF against certain 1 tumors —of animals. So far they haven’t proved of any value in human cancers. But a complete understanding of what they do and why could lead to all sorts of chemical treatments for humans. . Anbther way UCLA T have of killing cancers in rats is to trick cancer cells to take In iwhat seems to be their usual '“food’'’ but isn’t and which, in effect, chokes them with frustration. . Dr. Harvey M. Levy, speaking for himself and his colleague. Dr, Max S. Dunn, told how the synthetic chemical, ethionine, will cure 17 out of 18 cancerous rats.
