Living Costs Drop During February | ; Reach Lowest Level | Since June Os 1952 WASHINGTON. t’P — The • cost of living in February to the. lowest level since last June, the government reported today. \ J | The index of retail prices} (for | consumer goods fell four-tenths of } one, percent between mid-January and mid-Februaty the largest monthly decline in about" a year. ■ The steady decline has been on since November, 1952. The February decrease did not, howeveii, reflect price increases ori such items a$ cigarets, gasoline, and copper which were decontrolled recently. The bureau of labor statistics reported that the decline lowered the index to 113.4 percent of aven age 19417-49 prices — the, same aS last June. i|A 1.4 parceQX, dXJJtP iuJood prices dqring the period vwajMnainly responsible for the over-fall decline. The index has been falling since November when it was at a record high of 114.3 percent of 1947-49 prices. The February level, however, was nine-tenths of ope percent higher than a year ago and 11.4 percent above pre-Korea prices. Wages' were not involved in today’s report since they are tied to the old index whicn is being issued separately on a temporary basis while'/‘escalator” union contracts are Adjusted to the new System. “■filled up” all the way up to the Korean front lines. Because reserve dumps in the rear areas are overflowing, the spokesman said, some shipments of ajmmunilion consigned to Korea are now being diverted to other pointii. i He declined to identity the other points on grounds of security. But it is knowli that the army has been anxious about ammunition reserves in Etlrope and IndoChjnal as well as in Korea. The spokesman said the explanation of the sudden improvement in shell supply is that new ordnance plants, built during the two years following the outbreak of the Korean war, are now producing in quantity. Ammunition production figures are cloaked in secrecy, but the army disjclosed in February that there wan a 30-fold of artillery shell production in 1952 over the jeriod immediately following the outbreak ot the Korean war. In the face of Van Fleet’s charges, the army has .-onsistently Stuck to its claim I hat there never was a shortage of ammunition for troops on the f*ont lines.
