Progress Made On 'Sunshine Mining’ CHARLESTON, W. Va,. UP — lEngiijeers fori the United Carbide and' Carbon Chemical -Corp. believe they hatfe part of the answer that some day rhay bring ah era of “sunshine mining” when miners will not have to go underground to get coal. . \ They recently ran a test of their new machine that digs coal by remote control, and the results satisfied the most optimtstic expectations. \ ’ 'the engineers cautiofted that this doesn't mean the miners in the deep pits can expect? tq get above ground in the foreseeable future, but the system ihay help eliminate the ’most dangerous types of.mines, those juttiAg into the sides of mountains or Hills. In such mines, there is. always the possibility of a mountain slide that will cave in a shaft. , J- iHow It Works The mechanical miner was in-, serted into an outcropping coal seam on a mountainside 20 miles from here. It began pulling out coal at the rate of nearly two tons a minute. The coal dropped onto A conveyor belt and was carried down the mountainside to a dumping area. Within eight hours, 567 tons of coal had been taken out, none of ft touched by human hands. In one week it piled up

some 6,000 tons, with about 66 percent) of recovery from the seam. At present, the mechanical ferret jcab reach TOO feet within the earth, but soon it will be able to reac|h coal at 1,000 feet. Ttye :po s s i>b ili t y Os cutting throiigh rock and veering oft the coalman! is eliminated by means of electronic eyes mounted oh the cutting edge which send bdck beams to a control panel. Radar Technique The 'device, called stratascopes, are mounted on the outermost cutting teeth. In the control cab, the stratascopes are toupled to two polar dsciloscopes having circular screens resembling radar screens. Each sratas<i>pe makes a circle of light on the screen and the irregularities l on the screen tell the operator what kind of stratum the machine is cutting through. If tl|e cutters run into rock where the seani of coal Is broken, and* either upthrust or downthrust, the circles take on a jagged appearance, tilling the operator exactly wjiere thei coal seam ran out. Then he cap maneuver the cutters upward) or downwards until he hits the coal again. I i ” Different rock strata fonir different patterns! on the oscilation screen, and t since most coal strata have a nearly fixed* relation to each otper, there is little variation in the circle on the screen as long as the jcutters are going through coal. This electronic eye also keeps the machine from off course, and pulling out dirt instead of coal.; i J

tlit past 29 years. “I discovered that when the, chips are down, men won’t rely on ; women to make an important speeqh,” Fleming said. Only two women’s voices are heard in the 55 minutes of playing time in his record album, “Mister President, From F. Dj R. to Eisenhower,” which was released recently. (RCA-Victor). i One is the voice of Mrs. Roosevelt in the 1932 campaign, and the other is an unidentified woman campaigning for Sen. Robert A. Taft. ’ ;' i ’ z -

Talk Naturally Clare Boothe Luce and Dorothy Thompson made some excellent speeches during this 20-year period Fleming said, but the preponderance of male campaigners making major speeches crowded- them out of the album. “I don’t know whether men* ever will trust a woman with the big speeches—the ones where they pay big money for network time,” Fleming continued. “It isn’t a matter of intelligence, though maybe woman are partly to blame. • “They aren’t natural enough when they have an important

speech to make. I even decided against using that famous introduction Tallulah Bankhead gave president Truman in 1948 because she sounded so nervous and subdued.” He advises women to talk about what they know about their candidate or their party in natural, conversational fashiom — no haranguing: “They shouldn’t feel obligated to argue about subjects unless - they're well-informed, and they
