‘Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Matthew 18:1-4; 16-22; Jesus Teaches Humility and Forgiveness, for Sunday, January 25. ; , ■ \ : Ignorance regarding the nature of the kingdom of God and selfish ambition was the , reason for the disciples’ seeking honored positions and so a leason of humility was needed. Likewise, the lack of loye for enemies needed correction. - . ■ *• ;V.l. “At‘the same time came the disciples to JesuS; saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" There hall been contention among the disciples as to their poiiti’cal pbaitions in the new order, as they conceived it. Ambition has a place If the end sought is to glorify God, but if the end is for self glory, then it is wrong. V. 2. “And Jesus called a little child unto him and set him in the midst of them.” Teaching by illustration is most effective. The average child is not jealous. Unambitious, and humble The {ideal needs to be 1 put at the center of our thinking. V. 3. “And said, Verily, I say Unto you. Except ye be converted Andbecome as little children, ye shall not enter into - the kingdom of God." Since these disciples were converted, , the meaning is that these selfishly ambitious disciples Should turn their wrong ambition iijto right ambition: in failing to do this, they would lose holding any! place in the kingdom of God. V. 4-. “Whosoever, therefore, shall humble himself as. this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of God.’’ Here is a fact illustrated b.v an object lesson, the truth of which is clear. It takes constant watching and prayer that we may be always humble. V. 15. ‘‘Moreover, if thy brother should trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and(, hint alone; if he shall hear thee, tlrou hast gained thy brother.’’ Herteis a procedure for Christian brothers in the interest of harmofiy, ‘peace, and good will. Here is a j recognition of .human frailty
