I Comments zMI P on s.s.<\are! Ii lesson Creamed comments on the Sun-, day school lesson, Tracing Character to Its Source, Matt. 15:1-11, 18-20. for Sunday, January 4, 1953. The first lesson t of .the year deals with the only basls\,of good resolutions—a vital heart relation with God. A resolution is more than an act of the will. When we’ are committed to God’s will, he can accomplish t|is purposes for us. V.l. ‘‘‘Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were \of Jerusalem. saying:” Opposed in Jurea, Jesus lift, only to be followed by his opposers to report his actions and words. V. 2. “Why do thy transgress the traditions of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.” Jesus denounced only (the traditions of the Jews not the Mosaic Laws. They considered external parity to be much more impep-fant than- the purity of the hear! JU V. 3. ‘‘But he answered agd said unto them. Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?” Jesus implies that the disciples are not bound to obey man-made traditions that violate the law r s of God. He gives a specific case. J V. 4. “For .God commanded, saying. Hopor thy father and mother: and, he that curseth father or mother,, let him diejthe death.” The Jews were setting aside the fifth commandment—very important. since God was dealing with a nation in which his purpose depended upon parental instruction. V 5.5,6. “But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by Whatsoever thou niightest be profiled by me; apd honor not his lather or his mother, hy shall b e free. Thuh ye made the commandment' or none effect by your, traditions.’’ Con-j trary to God’s law, a man could i dedicate his property o'r anything ! to God to keep \from helping or doing his duty, to his parents. It could be done in 4 spirit of anger Or rebellion, too .This Jesus condemns. •

Do yftjyreaUy want to grow and fit into the New Y-ear? Then it would be well to decide right now to eliminate many of your old ideas. The beliefs tilat satisfied last' year may be hopelessly useless in the coming years. We must all seek the truth -God’s 1 truth as exemplified by thp. Master of f all life.’ All permanent success in life must" rest on the truth. Do\You Know \ ' ' - s ! Who said the' following: 1. “Am 1 niy bruitiier’s keeper?” 2. "Wilt thou consume the righteous with the wicked?” 3. "To the pure' all things are pure.” ' 4. , “What muslv I do to be sa.ve/d?” , ..... V 5.7,8. "‘Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth high unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with theiy lips; but their heart is far from me." The Jewish system of religion was lacking in morality. Jesus was condemning the national character of the Jews as being hypocritical. 1 They kept the law outwardly; God requires the heart V. 9. “But in vain they do Worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” By putting the commandments of men on a level with the divine requirements," their whole worship was rendered vain. ' ; T V.iO. b And he called the multi-\ tude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand.” The Conversation between v the Pharisees*, and Jesus was intended to disparage Jesus in the eyes of the people. He rebuffed them and turned to the multitude. 4 V\ll.y'Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh oiit of the mouth, this defileth a man.” Moral defilement is a matter not of food, but of words that express the thought and intention of the heart. Not physical touch but moral action makes a man impure before God, V Vilß. “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man." The heart is the seat of the motives and intentions which give character to conduct. Evil thoughts generated there are like arrows. \ ■ , u _ \ V. 19. vFor out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.’’ Evil thoughts are the fountains of all actions. Blasphemy is an intensified form of false witness directed against God. V. 20. "These are the things that defile a man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.” Only the depe inward corruption ;of the heart defiles — degrades. Dirty hands are analogous to crimHinal conduct, but it is not criminal to have dirty hands. ! —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.
