— - j'V ' ; _ I On s.s. f .gnHl Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Wise Men Seek Jesus, Matt. 2:1-12, for Sunday, December 28. \ The lesspn, making the’ end of a quarter and of a ydar, deals with the passing of an old order and the beginning of a new. Herqd typified not only the evil of the world, but also that spirit that believes that man can work out his destiny apart from God—a dahgerous attitude. \ - > i: V.l. "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, Wisemen from the east caihe to Jerusalem sayipg, “The world was ready for the spread of the gospel: the Roman Empire Was at peace, had good roads throughout, and a common language (Greek). Dispersed Jews had made gnown their convictipn of the cording Messiah. V. 2. “Where is he that iS born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and are come to worship him." The wise men were learned, but wisdom is more than learning 1 ; it involves a knowledge of Christ. They recognized that the .problems, of the world must be solved not by men; but by the Providence of God. V. 3. “And when, Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.?, Herod knew his rule was in danger. The world and its evil are always troubled at the prospect of advance. ! V,4, "And garnering together all the chief priests and scribes of Hie people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born." Herod’s lust for power is evident in his deception. World leaders today do not want to be bothered with, religious people and their seemingly impractical ideas. “And they said uhtb him. In Bethlehem of Jpdea} for thus it is written through the prophets. And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, no wise least among I the princes of Judah: For put of thee shall come forth a governor, who shall be shepherd of my people Israel.’ ’Tlie scribes gave Micah’s prophecy pointing to Bethlehem. Os course, it disturbing To serve our generation by reincarnating, Christ id our lives; to act, day by day, in the strength of the Eternal; to worship God in such simple, humble fashion as opens one’s whole being to His creative and re-creatiye Spirit—this is the meaning of Christmas, both as the Gospels set it forth and as the: history of Christlike men and women confirms it. For all who surrender their lives to Christ, this living Force is available. A special day of prayer for the new President-elect for Sunday, January 18th, has been proposed at the Fifth annual communion breakfast of the Radio and Television Industry. The announcement states, “Yoh, whoever you may be, can render a real service to your country And to your woild by praying eich day for divine stfengt|i ind guidance for our new\president as well as for Congress and the Judiciary." ■ 1 i 1 ' '., .1 | , Had the Word not bepn, made lesh this hard world would have no hope. \ ! < • •( i I ' i T* • •! ,I ~~

: . ■ i. to Herod; he had not been a shepherd to Israel but only a cruel ruler. y , V.7. “Then Herod privily called the Wise men, and learned of thpm\ exactly what time the star appeared.” The star was God’s symbol of power, light and wisdom. God’s ways, far above man’s, are well represented by a star. V.B. “And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said. Go and search out exactly concerning the young child; and w-hen ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may come and worship him.” Herod reveals himself here a crafty, selfish politician. Some meif today assume pious attitudes and go to church for selfish purposes. . V. 9. “When they had heard the king, they departed; and. Io the star which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came over and stood where the young child was.” As the wise men looked at the star for guidance, so let us look to Christ who alope can lead us to our goals.\ < V.lO. "And when \ they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.” We. too. rejoice when w'e experience thp leading of God in our lives. World chaos would vanish were we Christians to live Christ’s teachings at homp and abroad. t V.ll.,\“And they came into the house and saw the young ’ child with Mary his mother; and they fell down-and worshipped film; and. opening their treasures they offered udto him gifts, gold and frahjlncensp and myrrh.? Gold is the world’s most precious treasure, of which we arp to be God’s faithfukstewards. Frankincense, a fragrant substance used in temple worship. Reminds us that only in true wdrshjp do we find Christ. Myrrh, a bitter substance used in embalming the dead, >-as a symbol of Christ’s death, reminding us that Christ died sor 5 us, V. 12. “And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.” Herod is in your heart and mine. Let -us show oty wisdom, as did the wise men. by turning our backs on him who is the symbol of the awfulness of putting man first and God nowhere. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian 'Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.
