Taft's Chances For . s Senate Leader Boom Two Os Ike's Friends Irfow Conciliation WASHINGTON UP — Sen. Robert A. Taft’s chances of becoming Senate Republican floor deader got a lift totiay with conciliatory statements from two of President-electi Eisenhower’s closest friends in con-, gress. How much of a lift still depends on the reAction of Republican senators. ’ The statements came from Sens, Prank Carlson R-Kan. and H. Alexander Siftlth R-N.j., who conferred with in New York Tuesday. Carlson said after the meeting that Eisenhower would take no part in selection of a senate GOP floor leader, but added that: ~ ■ “If Serator Taft wants to.be Senate leader. I. assume he will 'be. and personal|y I would be for him?’ in the -light of other Carlson remarks, his statement was inter preted here as something less than an endorsement- of Taft for the floor leadership. , ’ I But it was also regarded as evidence that the senators” w< uld not fight to prevent the elec ion of the Ohioan, who lost the GOP presidential nomination to Eisenhower after a bitter struggle last summer. •Smith told newsmen that “Taft would be| the logical majority,leader and personally 1 hope that cam be brought about.” While Taft has never Called hirri-j self a candidate for the floor leadership, he has said he was available if Stn.
