Accordingly, the Roman pontiff ordered an investigation by St. Cyril to determine the day and month of Christ’s birth. Pope Julius I, after great deliberation, established December 25 as Christmas beginning in the year 350 A. D. Foremost sacred symbol of the American Christmas, the creche or lowly manger of the Christ Child, reminds us that on December 25 we are celebrating a birthday. This year, instead of being the generally imagined 1,952nd birthday of the Saviour, is most likely His 1,956th. * • * ROMAN RECORDS tell us it was in the year 4 B.C. that Caesar Augustus decreed the whole world should be taxed. 'Hence it was in that year, rather than in 1 A.
