Man Questioned As ft 'Grandma' Robber 60-Year-Oid Man Is Held In California LOS ANGELES. Calif. UP — Police questioned a 60-year-old man today In the belief he may haye put on skirts and blouses to pose as the “sweet.little old lady" who has robbed three banks of about 10,500. I Officers became auspicious that "Grandma" a notorious bank bandit, might really be "Grandpa” in disguise when they found a woman’s wardrobe in the hotel room of Alfred N. Hughes after he was arrested for attempted robbery Wednesday night. , The fqund in the elderly man’s room generally fits the description of “Grandma’s” sedate I attire, said Oapt. Harry Dtdion of the robbery squad. Hughes, an ex-convict with a 1 record of 55 dating back to 1902, walked into an ticket office and announced to Miss Orla Wang, 25, pretty blonde clerk: "I want the iponey.” As she reached for the cash drawer, Miss Wang stepped on an alarm button and • then- grappled with the elderly man until other employee helped him until police arrived. Detectives were sent to his hotel room for a routine search. It was then that His female trappings were discovered. LDidibß said Hughes, who refused to talk about the clothes, was of slight build, with soft features that could easily be utilized for masquerading as an elderly woman. FBI agents, meanwhile, were wondering about the authenticity of a note which they said may have been written by the pistolpacking Grandma. The writer of the hpte, which may have been composed by, a crank, said she is indeed a grandmother and is robbing banks to build a "nestegg” for her son fighting in Korea. "I spent a fortune giving him a fine education at the best schools. But all he ever learned was how to rob.\ “Now I have to rob in order to take care> of my son and myself,” the note said. It was one of several letters received by federal agents and police since Grandma struck for the third time last week. 1 Portions of the letter released by the FBI Wednesday disclosed that Grandma believed two more holdups would complete her “Nestegg” and that she would then retire from banditry.
