Truman, Stevenson Meet Al While House Plot Strategy For Rebuilding Party WASHINGTON UP — President Truman and Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson get together late today to plot strategy for rebuilding thelf party, which soon will be out oil power for the first time in' 20 years. It will be the first meeting between the two top ‘Democrats since tha election in which Stevenson was swamped by Dwight D. Elsenhower, i The Illinois governor was scheduled to arrive in Washington late this afternoon after addressing the CIO convention at Atlantic City, N. J. He will be a White House guest until Friday. He will have a quiet dinner with President and Mrs. Truman tonight and attend a “farewell” dinner Mr. Truman is giving Thursday night for his Cabinet and staff members.
The main political conference will take place during the day Thursday around the President's desk. Dembcratic National Chairman Stephen A. Mitchell wiUf participate. After conducting the inevitable post-mortem on the reasons tor their defeat, the Democratic leaders are expected to devote most of their time to planning a party comeback in the 1954 Congressional elections, e Stevenson, who will retire to private law practice in Chicago next month, has -said he wants to have a hand -in “strengthening some of the weak spots” in the party 1 . Mr. Truman is known to have ideas of his own on dial subject , . Mr. Truman announced in advance "that he regards Stevenson as head of the party, and the man to take charge of rebuilding for the future. The main challenge to Stevenson’s position as chief Democratic spokesman comes from Congress, where Sens. Richard B. Russell D-GajA Burnet R. Maybank DS. C.pand other southern Democrats already have served notice they intend to make Democratic policy during the next four years. Mitchell made &it clear at a press conference late Tuesday that he. recognizes it will be the Democrats in. Congress who will make the real party record poiieiea —by their votes on the Elsenhower program during the next four years. He« said Stevenson will, of course, make some policy statements of Mis own from time to time, and work with Democrats in Congress and at the state level on a program aimed to restore the

Brenn, president of Huntington Laboratories at Huntington, a world traveler, gave an entertaining as well as informative talk at the regular meeting of the Defcatur Lions chib Tuesday evening. Brenn Was sent to Europe as a representative of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce to view conditions in various parts % of Europe and possible industrial sites for the future.
