(International/ f —i T : r Much Research Lies Ahead In Polio Fight Safe Vaccine Still To Be Developed WASHINGTON UP — The medical director of the National Foundation for InfaritiU Paralysis said today science still has not developed “a vaccine that can be used safely and on a large scale’’ to prevent polio. Dr. Hart E. Van Riper said much research lies ahead despite recent optimistic repbrts from Baltimore, Texas and. lowa. He described a vaccine developed from killed polio virus by Dr. Howard Howe of Johns Hopkins University as "just too dangerous" fdr general use. "The vaccine is likely to cause an allergic encephalitis" in human beings, Van Riper s£.id. The chance? of contracting this, he said, would be greater than the ordinary chanf ces of developing paralytic polio. “I do not honestly feel that there will be any vaccine which ,woUl<t be available for effective use next summer,” he said in a copyrighted interview with the magazine U. S. News & World Report. ' Van Riper said use' of gamma globulin in Texas and lowa r indicates such treatment would be "very useful, i although of quite , limited application. . .certainly it is not anything like a complete" ani swer to our problem." i The gamma globulin treatment involves the injection of the gam- ■ ma globulin blood fraction of adults who havte had , polio into children give them ‘ immunity. The immunity “lasts for only a period of weeks." but may be used in localize)! epidemic areas to prevent t|ie spread 6t the disease, ! Van Riper said. 1 , “It now’ has beep shown that a killed Virus of poliomyelitis, given by injection to a human being, will produce sufficient immunity to at least indicate that there is real protection, against the paralytic disease,” he said. “Now thei thing to is to find a safe vaccine that) will produce this much immunity in human beings and be free of the dangers of allergic encephalitis or other complications.” . \i ' i .- - • .
